Former Music Exec and Wife Take Dream Cruise on New Sabre 48

Last September, Jerry Ade, a former music talent agency executive and real estate developer, and his wife, Marci, bought their dream boat, a Sabre 48 flybridge, from DiMillo’s in Portland, Maine. They named it Famous (Ade had been president of the Famous Artists Agency in New York, representing Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and The Beastie Boys, among others), and they headed down the coast to deliver it to their home in Naples, Florida. But weather, and a fuel problem, got in the way, and they ran out of time in Charleston. So they hired a delivery captain to take Famous to Naples. Now they have completed their own version of the loop, finishing the circle back to Charleston, living the dream, loving the cruising lifestyle.

On the original trip, everything went well until they got to Portsmouth, Virginia, where they refueled the boat for the ride down the ICW. The next morning, when Ade fired up the engines, a warning came up on the monitor at the helm: “Water in fuel, port side engine.” It was a weekend, so they changed filters, and left the next day, dialing back to 8-10 knots for the trip down to Coinjock. But there were still more warnings, more problems. The Ades finally put in to the Jarrett Bay Boat Works in Beaufort, North Carolina, for help. It turned out the fuel they had taken on in Portsmouth was bad, so the port tank had to be completely emptied and drained. Marci took pictures of the “nasty residue that they pulled out of our tank – disgusting.”

But there were good parts of that trip, too. She loved Harbor Village Marina in Hampstead, North Carolina, where they had “wine and cheese on the flybridge, watching a beautiful sunset.” Marci also liked the Barefoot Landing Marina in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, although she wasn’t happy about Lucky, the resident alligator. But they ran out of cruising time when they got to Charleston, and they had to leave the boat for the delivery captain.

In early May, the Ades wanted to complete the trip back to Charleston. And there were no problems this time. They headed south at first, to visit Faro Blanco in Marathon in the Keys; cruising at 23 knots, it took only five hours from Naples. Then they turned north for a highlight-reel of cruising the southeast – Coconut Grove, Bimini, Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale, Rybovich in West Palm Beach, the Jekyll Island Inn in Georgia, and eventually back to Charleston, where they left the boat. At the end, Marci wrote on her blog, “Three weeks traveling on this luxury Sabre was a pleasure. We loved every minute.” They’ll pick up Famous in the fall to take it back to Naples. For more:
