Now here’s news: Kadey-Krogen, which just celebrated its 40-year history of building full-displacement, blue-water trawlers with a blowout owners’ rendezvous in Newport, Rhode Island, announced that it will start a new company making contemporary 26-knot boats called SUMMIT, designed by performance superstar Michael Peters from Sarasota, Florida.

The SUMMIT line, starting with a flybridge 54, will all have planing hulls, per Peters’ history and Kadey-Krogen’s desire to go beyond its full-displacement heritage. Kadey-Krogen, which has built more than 600 full-displacement boats over the past 40 years, will continue all its operation in that segment. To emphasize its commitment to the traditional displacement boats, the owners of Kadey-Krogen decided to create a new company, SUMMIT, for the faster motoryachts.

Tom Button, the president of Kadey-Krogen Yachts, said that SUMMIT “is the right vessel for the buyer who recognizes that many of today’s motoryachts are purposely designed with ultra-trendy interiors that simply don’t pass the test of time. We introduce to the motoryacht segment what we’ve always done: Quality, performance, sophisticated style and great service.”

The fact that Kadey-Krogen turned to Michael Peters Yacht Design for the new hull underscores its desire to stake out a position in the luxury motoryacht field. One of the most well-known designers in the world, Peters recently designed Dasher, the new Hinckley 28.5-foot all-electric boat. Over the years, his designs have won 13 offshore world championships, and he has designed hulls for Cigarette, Magnum, Intrepid, Rybovich and Chris-Craft, among others.

For his part, Peters said he designed the SUMMIT 54 “to blend uncluttered indoor accommodation with outdoor living, with performance and excellent sea keeping. The outcome is a comfortable boat that can get you there quickly, in a style which will turn heads for it cleanly modern, yet understated design.”

Powered by twin Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, the SUMMIT 54 will cruise at about 23 knots. We don’t have many details yet, but the company says the beam is 15-feet plus and the displacement about 45,000 pounds. The hull will be solid fiberglass below the waterline, with foam coring above. The company is taking orders for the new motoryacht now, and the first one will be delivered in 2019.
