Navionics To Remap South Florida Waters Hit by Irma; Will Work with Local Community

When Hurricane Irma hit Florida on Sept. 10, it damaged marine resources, changing and rearranging shorelines and bottom contours, making existing charts and maps out of date. Now, Navionics, working with industry leaders and the South Florida boating community, is starting an effort to remap the area’s marine and inland waterways to make them safer in the future. The month-long remapping will start on Jan. 19, and individual boaters can help.

You can record and upload sonar logs to Navionics from any boat, because Navionics accepts sonar data from all major brands. Boaters can record sonar logs on their plotter and then send them to Navionics via Wi-Fi or upload them from their plotter card with a computer. They can share depth data though Navionics’ SonarChart Live feature, which creates maps in real time.

Boaters also can mark debris areas using the Community Edits tool on the Navionics Boating app; Navionics will share these locations with NOAA, which will have the debris removed. Navionics Nautical Chart also will be updated to include coastline corrections, Notices to Mariners, and to integrate future NOAA Chart editions when they’re issued.

The remapping effort is organized by Navionics working with Costa Del Mar, the Florida Keys and Key West Tourism Council, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Hawks Cay Resort, Hell’s Bay Boatworks, the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention and Visitors Bureau, Okuma, Power Pole, Sea Tow, West Marina, Yamaha, Yeti Coolers, and Yo-Zuri.

More information and loading instructions will be available starting January 4 at the Navionics website at www.navionics.com/RemapSouthFlorida, and at participating West Marine stores in South Florida.
