Larry Polster, New Owner of Hull #1 of Kadey-Krogen 50 Open: “Like a Kid in a Candy Store.”

If you want to see two happy owners of a new boat, take a look at Larry and Janet Polster in the top picture. They’re smiling from the Portuguese bridge of their new Kadey-Krogen 50 Open, which just arrived in Florida from the factory in Taiwan. The boat, hull number one, has been two years in the making, and the Polsters have been intimately involved for all that time; one year for the design and development, another for the construction.

And they’re certainly happy about the way things turned out. “Janet and I are like the proverbial kids in a candy store,” he said, “googling items for our new baby. Being a kid in a candy store is great. You should try it.”

Polster is not exactly a stranger to the planning and construction of a new blue-water cruising boat. In fact, he’s a vice president and partner of Kadey-Krogen Yachts, and early on in this project he said he wanted to live the dream, to participate fully in the building process – and then enjoy the boat once it was delivered.

The 50 Open has a new interior for Kadey-Krogen. The salon and galley are open to the pilothouse, which is just one step up. What is not new in the 50 Open, is the legendary Kadey-Krogen engine room, one of the best in the business, with 6’ 6” headroom and space all around. There’s plenty of standing and elbow room around the boat’s single 6-cylinder John Deere diesel and all the other equipment. And take a look at the varnished fiddle around the work bench; you won’t find highly varnished woodwork in all that many engine rooms.

The Polsters plan to have their new boat, named Together, at a Kadey-Krogen open house at the company’s headquarters in Stuart, Florida, on Jan. 18 to 20, and then in the Miami boat show starting Feb. 15. After all, Polster still has his day job. But then they will leave on their first cruise, to the Bahamas, in May. For more:
