Fight Over Marina Expansion Involves Boaters at Liberty Landing, Just Across Harbor from New York

The view from Liberty Landing Marina, in Jersey City, New Jersey, is simply spectacular, particularly at night. You look across New York Harbor to see all the lights of lower Manhattan, a sight that never gets old. I was there two years ago at the start of a trip up to Quebec City on a Cutwater 28 (pictured above),  and I didn’t want to go to bed. And when you leave the marina, you can see the Statue of Liberty just off to your right, while the Hudson and the entire West Side of New York unfold before you. As the old saying goes about real estate, it’s all about Location, Location, Location.

Now there’s a fight between Suntex Marinas, the company that runs the marina, and people representing Liberty State Park, on the south side. Suntex wants to build a new 45-acre marina there, since marina space along the Hudson is so scarce. Park advocates are against the plan, arguing against privatization of the park.

Meanwhile, people who keep their boats at Liberty Landing, such as Jim Chambers, a retired New York City cop, want the plan to succeed so that future generations can enjoy boating.  “The spaces for recreational boating have all but disappeared on the Jersey side of the river,” he told The Jersey Journal. “Children and grandchildren will never learn about it because they’ve never been exposed to it.” Read more:
