A 738-foot-long cargo carrier lost its rudder and crashed into a historic waterside mansion on the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey, causing a great deal of damage and temporarily closing the Strait, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The 17-mile Bosporus connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and then the Aegean and  the Mediterranean.

The Maltese-flagged ship, the Vistaspirit, crashed into a red mansion that dates back to the 18th century; it once belonged to a doctor in the Ottoman palace but now is primarily used for events, such as weddings or concerts. The Vistaspirit was carrying barley from Russia to Saudi Arabia.

The Bosporus separates the European and the Asian sides of Istanbul. The mansion is on the Asian side. Its roof and upper floors collapsed and the basement was slumping into the water after the crash. The Turkish Coast Guard temporarily closed the Strait until it pulled the Vistaspirit to a safe harbor.

I transited the Bosporus a few years ago testing a new Eastbay 48 and was amazed then by the amount of commercial traffic in the area, as well as by the size and color of the old mansions lining both shores. See the video and read more:
