Five Great Tips for Guests on Board. Number One: Don’t Contradict the Captain

We’ve all seen the lists of things to tell potential guests before they come on board, for an afternoon or for a week. The obvious things: soft-soled shoes, soft-sided luggage, lots of sunblock, and perhaps a good bottle of wine or rum to help everyone enjoy the evening.

But it’s the less obvious things that are interesting. I once sailed back from Bermuda on a beautiful Tartan 41 and my friend, the owner, told me before we left that he had just one request: That no one come on board with a toothpaste tube with a removable cap; the cap had to be attached to the tube. Makes sense, when you think about it; no owner wants to have the sink drain clogged up with a hapless toothpaste tube cap. (The sail back was fantastic, by the way.)

But here’s a fun list of five things not to do on a boat vacation, from the people at boatandboats.com, starting with “don’t contradict the captain,” very good advice from my point of view, and ending with “don’t brush your hair – or do anything else” when you’re standing upwind. (You also don’t want to bring along the FBI, as shown above in The Wolf of Wall Street.) Read more:
