The Moorings just opened its latest charter operation in Key West, the southernmost point in the United States; it’s actually closer to Havana than it is to Miami. Key West, just in case you haven’t been there, also exists in a different mind-set than the rest of the United States; it’s fun, it’s historic, and the boating is sensational.
Once the home of Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Jimmy Buffet, Key West offers a vacation, on land or on the water, that you won’t forget. It has a unique architecture, and is full of pastel homes and colorful bars. You can join a lot of other people every night on Mallory Square, trying to catch the green flash as the sun goes down. And if you’re there for any holidays, particularly Halloween, you can take part in some of the Conch Republic’s legendary parades and celebrations.
The water is dazzling, with miles of protected cruising grounds in the keys, or you can head 70 miles offshore to the Dry Tortugas National Park. The snorkeling, diving and fishing are world-class.
The Moorings offers crewed and bareboat charters there, sail and power, in partnership with Florida Yacht Charters. The boats are at Stock Island Marina and Ocean’s Edge Marina & Resort. Typical is a 40-foot Fountaine Pajot power cat (pictured above) with twin Volvo IPS500 pod drives for easy docking and maneuvering. It has three cabins, sleeping six people, plus a RIB, a large master stateroom with a view of the water from the bed, and all the electronics you need for cruising – radar, autopilot, AIS, VHF (plus a handheld), and a chartplotter.
For entertaining or simply enjoying your time afloat, the galley is fully equipped. The boat also has an electric grill, microwave oven, fridge, freezer, icemaker, dishwasher and water maker.
