Barton & Gray Building New 48 Daychaser

Barton & Gray just announced that they’re building a new Daychaser 48, designed by Doug Zurn of Marblehead, Massachusetts, for their members. The first Daychaser, to be built at Boston Boatworks, will be launched early next year.

Barton & Gray was started in 2006 in Nantucket. It now operates the Barton & Gray Members Club fleet with more than 50 yachts (mostly Hinckleys) with captains in almost 30 harbors.

It says it developed the Daychaser 48 as a result of a demand for an open, flexible boat. The Daychaser, powered by two 550-hp Cummins diesels, will have a top speed of 35 knots. The new boat also will have Hamilton water jets for safety, performance and low draft, so the boat can be pulled up to a beach for a picnic. (Its draft is just 2’ 6.”)

Zurn is one of the country’s most highly regarded designers, particularly with Down East- style boats. In the past 25 years or so, he’s designed boats for MJM, Marlow, Bruckmann, Lyman-Morse, Derecktor, Hylas, NEB, Duffield, Williams, and Vanquish, among others, plus the Shelter Island Runabout and Billy Joel’s 57-foot commuter Vendetta.

The Daychaser 48 will have four separate zones for socializing; a bow lounge, a pilothouse bar and settee, aft deck chaise lounges, and a beach club on the stern for water sports. Below, it will have a large head and a full shower, a nav desk, storage and a daybed for an occasional nap.

The helm will have a custom joystick for easy docking and maneuvering. The captain and first mate will have chairs on an elevated area for visibility all around. The galley is up, on the port side, just forward of the pilothouse bar. A U-shaped settee is to starboard.

The boat has an LOA of 48’ and a beam of 14’ 11.” Read more:
