Highfield To Launch 2 New RIBS in Lauderdale

Highfield just announced that it will launch two new sport RIBs at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, starting Oct. 26. For the U.S. market, Highfield will introduce the Sport 900, an almost 30-foot company flagship, and the slightly smaller 25-foot Sport 760. Highfield has been making premium aluminum-hulled RIBs from 10 to 30 feet in China since 2011; they are now sold in 38 countries around the world. Shark Kills U.S. Tourist in Bahamas

An American tourist was attacked and killed while she was snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas on Tuesday. Caroline DiPlacido, 58, who lived near Erie, Pennsylvania, was on a seven-night cruise on the Harmony of the Seas with her husband and three children. The liner left Port Canaveral on Friday. When it docked in Nassau, the family took an excursion with a local tour company for a snorkeling trip. The family was snorkeling near Rose Island when police said a bull shark attacked DiPlacido. Silent Yachts just announced that it’s creating a new line of electric-powered performance boats, starting with a 60-knot Speed 28 RIB. Four Winns, now part of the massive Beneteau Group, just unveiled its totally new TH36 catamaran at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Based in Cadillac, Michigan, Four Winns says the TH36 is the first in a new line of power catamarans. Boat Hits Channel Marker in Keys; 1 Killed, 3 Hurt

Four high school girls were seriously injured when the 28-foot Robalo center console they were riding in with 10 other people hit a channel marker near Boca Chita Key in Florida and capsized. One of the girls, Lucy Fernandez, 17, a well-liked senior, died of her injuries the next day. The Coast Guard said the accident occurred about 6:30 Sunday night on the Intracoastal Waterway in Biscayne Bay about ten miles south of Boca Chita. New Study: How Whales Share Their Songs

Humpback whales, it turns out, are creating individual songs and then sharing them with other whales. A new study says the songs can pass from one whale population to another, and even from the Pacific to the Atlantic. “Half the globe is now vocally connected for whales,” said Ellen Garland, a marine biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and the author of the study, “and that’s insane.” Her study was just published in the Royal Society Open Science journal.
