Charleston, South Carolina, is one of the most historic and, to my mind, at least, most enjoyable cities to visit in the United States – particularly if you arrive by boat. The last time I was there, just a few years ago, I was on an Eastbay 50, coming down from Connecticut, and we arrived at the sea buoy on a mid-September morning. Coming in the long, well-marked channel took a while, and we could see the skyline and then the Battery district, at the juncture of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers that mark the edges of the town, bathed…

Vladimir Putin, 69, the former KGB Lieutenant Colonel who has been the president and prime minister of Russia since 2020, is quite a yachtsman. Indeed, Putin now owns at least four yachts, worth about $125 million. This might seem unusual for someone who says his government salary is $100,00 a year, but then Putin’s net worth is estimated to be about $40 billion. Here’s a fun story from therichest.com and a video below about Putin’s four yachts: The Graceful was built by Blohm and Voss in 2014 and painted in a rich hue of white. It’s 269 feet long and…

Walker Bay just introduced its new Revo 21, a fast, comfortable boat that the company says is the world’s first 21-foot luxury sport RIB. It is indeed versatile; you can use it for just about anything you want to do on the water – fishing, diving, picnics, water sports or just driving around the harbor or the next cove. With a beam of 9’ 5”, the Revo 21 is wider than most 21-foot RIBs, and that extra space has been put to good use. The boat can hold 12 people, including forward seating for seven with comfortable cushions and a…

Greenline just had the debut of its new 68 hybrid, the flagship of its Slovenian fleet, at the Fort Lauderdale show, and it announced that it’s working on a new 58 Fly, which will be its next largest yacht, for a launch next fall. Greenline says that the 68, which can operate for as long as two days on battery power alone, is the largest production hybrid in the world. The planned 58 Fly will have all the same eco-friendly advantages as the 68, including the ability to run under diesel or solar/electric power, but in a slightly smaller package,…

With great white sharks, it’s not personal. If they see you swimming on the surface of the water, they’ll probably think you’re a seal or a sea lion, and you just represent the next meal in their lifelong food chain. That’s the conclusion of a new study just published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface that explored the theory that many great white bites, particularly juvenile great white bites, are simply a case of mistaken identity. “These are not mindless killers, but we just happen to look like their food,” said Dr. Laura Ryan, of Macquarie University in…

Raymarine just introduced its new Cyclone series of solid-state, open-array radars at the Fort Lauderdale show. The all-new CHIRP pulse compression radars come in 3-, 4- and 6-foot arrays, with two power options for each size: The Cyclone, with 55 watt, 6kW performance, and the Cyclone Pro, with 110 watt, 12kW performance. All the models have Raymarine’s new detection technology, including the Cyclone Bird Mode that will help anglers find the birds that lead to schools of baitfish. The Cyclone radars have a new look, developed from an aircraft-wing design, and they also have a low profile, measuring just 13.2…

The United States and the European Union have agreed to end the EU’s 25 percent retaliatory tariffs on American-made boats and engines entering the EU. The boating tariffs were part of a larger agreement, announced in a statement by President Biden and Ursula von der Leyden, President of the EU Commission, during the G20 Summit in Rome, that removed US tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from the EU that dated to 2018 and the Trump Administration. The end of the tariffs are good news for American boat builders. “This agreement is a momentous victory for the recreational boating industry,”…

A pod of dolphins lead a sailor to rescue an exhausted naked woman who had been struggling to stay afloat for 12 hours about three miles off Malibu in Southern California. The woman, 26 years old, was gray and suffering from extreme hypothermia when she was rescued and probably would have drowned if she had been in the 66-degree water much longer. She spent three days in the hospital recovering from her ordeal. Khosrow Khosravani (pictured above), 60, a former lecturer in information technology at UCLA and Harvard, thought he and some friends would just enjoy an easy sail on…

The owner of a 37-foot Pursuit that hit a day marker in the Boston Harbor at 3 a.m. last July, killing a woman, has been indicted for involuntary manslaughter. The Suffolk District Attorney, Rachael Rollins, announced that the boat owner, Ryan Denver, 38, was also indicted on counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Denver was driving his Pursuit 365 named Make It Go Away in the early morning of July 17 when it hit day marker “5” off Castle Island head on. The boat, powered by three outboards, sank and Denver and his seven passengers were thrown into…

Nordhavn is having the world-wide debut of its new 80 at the Fort Lauderdale show, as well as displaying its new 41, the smallest cruiser in its legendary blue-water fleet. The new Nordhavn 80 is something of a departure for the company; it looks a bit more like a superyacht than like most previous Nordhavns. Jeff Leishman, Nordhavn’s design chief, drew the 80 with straighter lines, larger windows, thinner mullions, and generally more of a contemporary European influence than was visible in Nordhavns in the past. If you think this Nordhavn is different, consider the hot tub on the extended…
