U.S. Sea Levels Will Rise a Foot by 2050: NASA

Sea levels along the coasts of the contiguous United States will probably rise a foot by 2050, according to a new study by NASA. The increase will be worse than previous estimates had predicted. The rising sea levels will cause increased flooding for millions of Americans living near the coasts, NASA said. (The picture above shows a flooded road in Norfolk, Virginia.) To determine the new predictions, NASA researchers on a Sea Level Change Team examined decades of satellite observations. They wanted to sharpen predictions for coastal communities that can be hit by both catastrophic and nuisance flooding in years…

NOAA: Record-Breaking Coastal Flooding To Continue

July 14, 2020: Coastal communities across the U.S. continued to see record-setting high-tide flooding last year, forcing their residents and visitors to deal with flooded shorelines, streets and basements — a trend that is expected to continue into 2021. The elevated water levels affected coastal economies, tourism and crucial infrastructure like waste and stormwater systems, according to a new NOAA report. The report, 2019 State of High-Tide Flooding and 2020 Outlook, documents changes in high-tide flooding patterns from May 2019 to April 2020 at 98 NOAA tidal gauges along the U.S. coast, and provides a flooding outlook for these locations for…

Record Tides, Storms Hit Scituate, Massachusetts. Residents Wonder How Long They Can Hang On

We hear a lot about the fears of climate change and rising sea levels in Miami Beach, say, or the barrier islands of North Carolina. But nowhere are those problems more pressing than in Scituate, Massachusetts, a waterfront community of 18,133 people on the South Shore about 30 miles below Boston, where a series of nor’easters this year caused enormous damage. In three weeks this March, four nor’easters hit the area. Two of the four high tides were strong enough to rank as numbers one and three on Boston’s all-time record tide list. Residents say that after March, Scituate looked…
