Norway Opens Investigation To Find Out Why Stricken Cruise Liner Ever Left Port

Norwegian officials have opened an investigation to determine why the 745-foot-long cruise ship Viking Sky ever left port despite storm warnings. The ship lost propulsion, requiring helicopters to rescue 479 of its 930 passengers off the western coast of Norway. The ship eventually limped into port after a harrowing day and night in stormy seas. The United States and Britain also are investigating the incident, which easily could have ended in tragedy. The Norwegian Red Cross said that 20 passengers were hospitalized with injuries, including broken bones and cuts. Three suffered serious injuries; one is in critical condition. Videos taken…

Cruise Liner Loses Power in Buzzards Bay for Three Hours. All Safe

The 440-foot luxury cruise liner Star Pride with 351 people on board lost power for about three hours Friday afternoon on Buzzards Bay between Cuttyhunk on the Elizabeth Islands and Westport on the Massachusetts mainland. The Coast Guard sent boats from their stations in the Cape Cod Canal, Woods Hole and Menemsha plus a Jayhawk helicopter. Commercial tugs also responded. Windstar Cruises, the ship’s parent company, said the Star Pride lost cooling water for its engines and they shut down automatically. The ship lost propulsion. Largest Cruise Liner in the World Just Launched; 18 Decks, 6,680 Passengers

Here’s some news that’s either awesome or frightening, depending on your point of view. Royal Caribbean has just launched the biggest cruise ship in the world, the new Symphony of the Seas, which is 1,188 feet long and weighs in at 228,081 gross tons (about 1,000 tons more than its older sistership, Harmony of the Seas). The new Symphony of the Seas has 18 decks (including 16 for guests), and it holds 6,680 guests in 2,759 staterooms. It also carries 2,200 crew, and cruises at 22 knots.
