Princeton Team Sets Electric Speed Record

A team of Princeton students designed an electric boat that just shattered the world speed record. The boat, a 14-foot hydroplane named Big Bird, flew over a measured kilo course on Lake Townsend in North Carolina on a two-way average speed of 114.4 mph. The previous world record of 88.6 mph was set by Jaguar Vector Racing, a professional racing organization, in 2018. The Princeton team, organized as Princeton Electric Speedboating, started work in February, 2022. It’s made up of more than 40 undergrad and grad students with a wide range of majors, but a heavy concentration on engineering and…

New Gussie Awards for Best Electric Boats

The winners of the fourth annual Gussie Awards, recognizing the best new electric boats, were just announced. The awards were started four years ago by Plugboats to recognize advances in electric boating, as an alternative to boats powered by fossil fuel. They have grown in importance, reflecting the rapid growth of electric boats around the world. This year, 160 boats were nominated for the awards, coming from 25 countries and every continent except Antarctica. The winners were selected by a panel of 25 international electric-boat experts plus votes from more than 5,000 electric boat enthusiasts. Here are some of the…

Long-Range Electric R30 Launching Soon

The Blue Innovations Group, founded by a former Tesla top executive, just announced that it will launch its innovative R30 electric boat in December. The R30 is 30 feet long with a 10-foot beam, making it one of the largest all-electric boats on the market. It’s powered by a “dual motor powertrain” producing 400-hp each, and it uses Lithium ion Phosphate batteries instead of the more standard Lithium ion in a 221-kWh battery pack for 600 kW of power. The batteries are stored in banks that are built into the framework of the boat. The new boat is projected to…

New Electric Frauscher x Porsche Just Launched

The new Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air was just launched at Lago di Garda in northern Italy for the first time. The innovative new 28-foot electric runabout uses powertrain technology from Porsche’s all-electric Macan, which is still under development. The Frauscher x Porsche comes with 400 kW of electric power and has a top speed of 46 knots. At its optimum cruising speed of 22 knots, the lithium-ion battery with a 100 kWh capacity lasts about an hour; the battery also comes from the Macan. The boat uses 80-volt technology for fast charging. The battery can be charged with…

Candela Sets Electric Boat Distance Record

A 28-foot Candela C-8 Polestar electric foiling boat just set a record by covering 420 nm in a single day, a milestone accomplishment in the move to renewable energy. The previous record, set by a Voltari 260, was 79 nm in 20 hours. During its 24-hour run, the Swedish-built Candela ran at about 27 knots most of the time. It cruised in a circular 20-nm loop in the waters off Stockholm, stopping each lap to recharge with a fast Plug charger. Each charge took 18 minutes. “This feat shows that fast, electric waterborne transport over long distances is viable today,…

New Powerdock With Solar Panels

Faroboats, a fairly new company in Lisbon, has a creative idea about how you can recharge the batteries on your electric boat. They’ve just launched the Faro Powerdock, a floating dock with solar panels.  The Powerdock will work with any electric boat, but it will charge a 16-foot Faro5 electric boat in less than three hours. The Powerdock’s roof holds four 450-watt solar arrays of four panels each, with a total output of 2.7 kW. You also can order it with wind turbines to help produce more energy than just the solar panels. Under sunny conditions, the batteries on the…

New 36-Foot Electric Boat with 200-nm Range

Optima-Projects, a fairly new company near the Solent in the UK, just launched their revolutionary 36-foot Optima E10 all-electric boat with a staggering 200-nm range. The Optima E10 prototype is marked by a unusual hull shape where the slender central hull is flanked by even thinner external ones, creating tunnels underneath. The design is something of a merger of a monohull and a trimaran, and it enhances efficiency while reducing drag. The two external hulls contribute to the boat’s stability, providing a comfortable and smooth ride. Even with the outer hulls, the Optima’s beam is just 11’ 6”, so it…
