Lauderdale: Much More than FLIBS

If you’re one of the 100,000 or so people heading for the big Fort Lauderdale boat show starting Oct. 25, or if you’re just going to Lauderdale at any other time, do yourself a favor. Stay a while. Lauderdale, in my opinion, is one of the most relaxed, enjoyable cities on the cruising boat circuit. The fact that it’s also one of the world’s major boating centers, virtually filled with marinas, boatyards and boating service operations, is just extra icing on the cake. Fort Lauderdale is often called the Venice of America, for good reason. It has 165 miles of…

Big Waterfront News from Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale, already known as the yachting capital of America, is going to get bigger yet. The city government just approved a $1 billion redevelopment of the Bahia Mar complex, home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, to include four condominium towers, a 23-floor luxury hotel, a marina village with restaurants and bars, and a park with a public waterfront promenade. Then, across town, the Port 32 Fort Lauderdale Marina, a new development, opened this week on the Marina Mile on the New River, just west of I-95. It has room for 32 yachts in a three-acre yacht basin,…

A Blowout Winterfest Parade in Fort Lauderdale

Everybody loves a parade, and it seems that boating people particularly love a boating parade. There are boat parades across the U.S. this holiday season, where owners deck out their vessels with lights, Santas, reindeer and lot of other things to get in the holiday spirit. It’s not surprising that holiday parades are big in Florida; indeed, boat parades started there in the 1920s when owners decorated their boats with candles and cruised the waterways singing Christmas carols. Things have changed a bit since then; the candlepower, and horsepower, have grown. The wattage was most on display last Saturday night…

Huge Lauderdale Show Starts Oct. 27

The massive Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest in-the-water show in the world, opens on Wednesday, Oct. 27, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 31. Last year, the show was only half its usual size, because of the Covid pandemic, but this year it’s back with everything from superyachts to SUPs, on the docks, in tents and on land exhibits. In 2019, the last pre-Covid year, the show attracted more than 100,000 people. This year, that number is expected again, with the show in multiple locations, centered at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center and Las Olas Marina, as well as…

Want To Dry Stack Your Bertram 46? No Problem

A new high-tech, fully automated dry-stack marina is coming to Fort Lauderdale, and it is large enough to accommodate a 46-foot boat that has 17 feet above the waterline. And it’s sophisticated enough to deliver your boat to you in five minutes. The new F3 Marina will be at 1335 SE 16th Street, near the 17th Street Causeway (see the map, above), and it’s being built by Miller Construction of Fort Lauderdale. It will have 240 racks in a 59,000-square-foot building that’s 130-feet high. It’s due to be completed in September, 2021. The building will have a 1,750-ton steel frame,…

Other Than the Show, Here’s How To Enjoy Fort Lauderdale

If you’re one of the 110,000 people going to the big Fort Lauderdale boat show starting Oct. 30, or if you’re just going to Lauderdale at any other time, do yourself a favor and stay for a while. Lauderdale, in my opinion, is one of the most relaxed, enjoyable cities on the cruising boat circuit. The 21 Best Travel Destinations for 2019. Take a Cruise To See the Stalking Jaguars in Central Brazil

Where in the world to go this year? Bloomberg answers that with a list of 21 destinations around the globe that will be hot with travelers for a lot of reasons – growing cachet, new resorts, new restaurants, and new transportation possibilities that open up places that were simply too hard to get to in the past. Some places on the list are hardly a surprise: Paris, anyone, or even Ibiza in the Balearics (see the picture at the top). But how about Pantanal, in Brazil (certainly new to me)? Bloomberg also gives a shout-out to both Savannah, Georgia, and Fort…

On Watch

Fort Lauderdale Report: First Day at FLIBS By Peter A. Janssen Walking down the Beneteau dock at the opening day of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was like running into a new, improved version of an old friend. I could almost hear the new Beneteau 47 Swift Trawler, which was making its U.S. debut at the show, calling my name. After all, I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for Beneteau’s Swift Trawler line ever since I took one around part of the Great Loop a few years ago. But that was a two-cabin, single-diesel 34. The new…
