Newport Show Opens with More Great Looking – and More Powerful – Boats than Ever Before By Peter A. Janssen The Newport show, the first of the fall boat show season, just opened, with more boats than ever before and, to my mind, more great-looking and great-performing boats than ever before. The brand-new Palm Beach 50GT, for example, just launched for the show, is boating eye-candy writ large, with a head-turning sapphire blue hull, low profile, drop-dead gorgeous tumblehome and curves everywhere. The fact that it tops out a 42 knots, driven by twin 600-hp Volvo IPS800s, is just icing…

Living On Board For the Summer: Cheaper than a Second House with a Much Better View

A lot of people are finding that a living on a boat is a lot cheaper, and a lot more fun, than living in a second home on land. And living on the boat definitely has better views. You’ll always have views of the water, and if you don’t like it where you are, you can fire up the engine and move somewhere else. Here’s a fun look at people who are living aboard this summer from observer.com: “The advantages of living aboard a boat are many,” says David Doody, general manager of the big Brewer Capri Marina in Port…

Now, on the opening day of the Palm Beach show, it said it is building an entirely new line of carbon-fiber, outboard-powered, 42-foot sport boats. Hinckley’s New All-Electric Dasher Finds a Fan in Architectural Digest

Hinckley Yachts, with their classic lines and Down East heritage, have always appealed to the rich and famous. The Rockefellers have had Hinckley sail and power boats at their places in Blue Hill, Maine, for generations. Martha Stewart had an early Picnic Boat at her place in Maine. Bob Wright, the former president of NBC, has a Hinckley, appropriately named Peacock, at his place in Southport, Connecticut. So it’s probably no surprise that Architectural Digest, the magazine that appreciates iconic design and celebrates the homes and lifestyle of people who live well, just wrote a story about the newest Hinckley,…

Hunt Yachts, the legendary builder of blue-water, go-anywhere boats for more than half a century, just introduced a new, elegant 40-foot center console with a queen berth tucked into its cabin that is powered by three 300-hp Mercury Verado outboards. The new Hunt, with a 23-degree deadrise at the transom, combines two major trends: The move to larger and larger center consoles, incorporating more amenities to make them family-friendly, and the move to larger and larger outboard engines for fuel-efficient, quiet and reliable power. Hunt says the new 40 with standard power will top out at 54 mph; with three…

Forbes Tells How Hinckley Developed Dasher, Its Revolutionary New All-Electric Boat

Here’s a great story from Forbes about how Hinckley decided to develop Dasher, the traditional Maine builder’s new 28-foot all-electric boat. Unveiled at the Newport International Boat Show in September, Dasher is the world’s first luxury electric boat, powered by two 80-hp electric motors and dual BMW i3 lithium ion batteries. Development of the revolutionary boat, with a lightweight carbon-epoxy composite hull and titanium hardware, dates to a conference of industry leaders two years ago, designed to make sure that Hinckley was looking to the future. As a result, Forbes says, “Hinckley envisioned a luxury vessel free of fossil fuels…
