HMY and Two Oceans Launch Outboard Cruisers

HMY Yacht Sales and Two Oceans Marine just announced that they’re developing a new line of luxurious outboard-powered, express cruising boats, starting with a 50- and a 60-footer. HMY is one of the largest yacht brokers and dealers in the U.S., with offices in Florida and South Carolina. Two Oceans is a long-time builder of blue-water catamarans in Cape Town, South Africa. The two companies joined forces last year to introduce a line of power cats to the U.S. The new express cruisers are the ECLIPSE 505 (pictured at top and below) and ECLIPSE 605. They are designed by Michael…

Axopar Launches Long, Low, Lean 45

Axopar has just launched its new flagship 45 XC Cross Cabin, an adventure cruiser that tops out at 45 knots with three fuel-efficient 300-hp Mercury Verado outboards. This latest and largest Axopar is long, low and lean, with a beam of only 13’ 6” and it shares the company’s increasingly popular lineup of fast boats that now starts at 22 feet. The innovative builder from Finland says the 45 is aimed at owners who want the same adventuresome spirit of smaller Axopars, but with more interior volume and deck space. Axopar says the 45 is an alternative to larger and…

MJM Building New 42 Couples Cruiser

MJM just announced that it’s making a new 42, an all-weather, all-conditions 48-knot cruiser with what the company calls a “Carolina Downeast” design and more than a touch of class. The company, now based in Washington, North Carolina, says the 42 is the evolution of a couple’s liveaboard performance cruiser. They developed it with Michael Peters, the Sarasota designer who’s done everything from Hinckleys and superyachts to speedboats, and input from the owners of MJM 40s, one of the builder’s most popular cruisers. The 42’s helm deck is enclosed for total climate control and comfort, but it can be opened…

Nimbus 40: Much More Than a Fast Commuter

More than 20 years ago, I often commuted to work in midtown New York from Norwalk Cove Marina in Connecticut on a variety of boats, depending on which one my magazine was testing for the summer. I remember a Sea Ray, a Formula, a Fountain, a Donzi, a Phoenix and a Pursuit at different times. (There was no way I could commute back and forth in the same day on my own Grand Banks with its 8-knot top speed.) But those commutes, morning and evening, going down Long Island Sound, the East River past the U.N., around the tip of…

Brabus Shadow 500: Head-Turning Looks and Fun

If you want to add a little juice to your life in these trying times, try the Brabus Shadow 500, built in conjunction with Axopar Boats. It’s a tricked out, semi-custom version of the Axopar 28, and it hits 50 knots with twin 250-hp Mercury outboards. You can order it with an open deck or optional aft cabin. Fun, as in a major adrenaline rush, is standard equipment. The fun comes from Axopar’s twin-stepped hull with a sharp entry and 22-degree deadrise at the transom, all driven by two Mercury V8 Pro XS outboards. The lightweight Mercs produce head-snapping torque;…

New Sessa Key Largo 40: Versatile and Fast

Lots of boats have terraces or doors that open from the side bulwarks to increase the amount of space in the cockpit and to provide access to water sports. But the new Sessa Key Largo 40 takes that concept to an entirely new level. Take a look: Both sides of the cockpit drop down, creating an exceptionally large open space for a 40-foot boat. The seating is modular and can be reconfigured to fit your mood on the water: Running, sunning, or just enjoying an al fresco lunch or cocktails. Below, the Key Largo 40 sleeps four in a super-modern…

Aquila Launches Redesigned 32 Sports Cat

Aquila just launched a redesign of its popular, outboard-powered 32 catamaran, with a new hardtop, upgraded seating and more space for living and cruising on board. The 32 has a cabin below in the port hull where two people can sleep comfortably; two more could sleep in the salon; a head is in the starboard hull. With a 12’ 8” beam, the Aquila 32 has room for a family or group of friends to enjoy a day on the water; indeed, it can hold 14 people. The foredeck is particularly inviting, with two comfortable lounges, with arm rests, affording privacy…

New 48 Wallytender: 55-Knots with 4 Merc Verados

The new 48 Wallytender X, powered by four 450-hp Mercury Verado R outboards, is designed for the U.S. market, particularly for the South Florida area, where its aggressive styling and 55-knot performance make it an easy fit. The 48 is the first Wally built since the Ferretti Group took over the Monaco-based company. An earlier version was powered by twin 480-hp Volvo IPS600 pod drives, and it topped out at abut 38 knots. Wally’s shift to outboard power is part of a major trend that’s been growing in the past few years, and includes such Downeast builders as Hinckley, MJM,…

New Saxdor 320: A Blend of Looks, Pedigree, and Price

Here’s a new boat that’s bound to get a lot of attention at the boat shows this fall, because of its looks, its pedigree, and its price. Take a first look at the head-turning Saxdor 320 GTO from the new Finnish company, Saxdor Yachts, founded just last November by Sakari Matilla, who previously was a founder of Axopar and several other boat companies. The Saxdor 320 GTO also is a product of the award-winning firm of J&J Design, which has worked on some of the best-selling sail and power boats for the past 36 years. And the Saxdor 320 GTO…

New Aviara 40: More Space Than Ever Before

Aviara, the new brand from MasterCraft, just introduced its flagship Aviara 40 at the Miami show recently. MasterCraft, based in Venore, Tennesee, started the Aviara line last year, and already has a 32 and a 36; the 40 builds on their lines, but with more. And “more” is what it’s all about, as in more space and more seating than is the norm, even on a 40-footer. We usually deal with cruising boats here, but even they are building new ways to find more social space on their boats, particularly in the aft cockpit area. The new Aviara 40 is…
