Big Newport Show Opens Sept. 15

The Newport International Boat Show, marking the start of the big show season on the East Coast, starts on Thursday, Sept. 15, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 18. One of the largest and most important shows in the United States, the Newport show covers 14 acres in historic Newport, Rhode Island, centered around the Newport Yachting Center downtown. The Newport show has always been one of my favorites, because almost all of the news boats are there, and then, well, because it’s in Newport, one of the iconic boating destinations in the world. This year the show, the 51st annual,…

Nordhavn To Show New 63 Aft Pilothouse Cruiser in Newport

Nordhavn will be showing its new 63 aft pilothouse cruiser at the Newport International Boat Show, starting Sept. 12. With a hullform based on the popular (and well-proven) Nordhavn 55, the 63 will take you anywhere in the world. It’s powered by a single 325-hp John Deere diesel, and it carries 2,500 gallons of fuel, so it definitely is capable of repeating the route of the historic Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 15 years ago, from Fort Lauderdale to Gibraltar (with stops in Bermuda and the Azores). If you want to stay closer to home, the Nordhavn 63 will carry you in…

Back Cove Tests Twin 300-hp Yamaha and 350-hp Suzuki Outboards on Its New 34O. The Suzukis Are 3 Knots Faster

It’s not often that you can compare the performance of a brand-new boat with different power configurations, but Back Cove has just released that information for its new 34O (for outboard) cruiser that will make its public debut at the Newport International Boat Show, starting Sept. 13. The standard power for the Maine-built couple’s cruiser is two 300-hp Yamaha outboards; two 350-hp Suzukis are an option. Here’s how they performed. Back Cove tested the two power options three days apart in mid-August with about the same fuel, water and load in similar sea conditions on West Penobscot Bay near the…

New Calvin Beal 38 with a Rich Maine-Built Heritage and 20-Knot Speed

It just doesn’t get any more Down East than this – Star, a new, well-appointed 38 Calvin Beal lobster boat with roots in Maine that just won’t quit. First off, Star was designed by Calvin Beal Boats in Beals, Maine, on an island off Jonesport way up the Gulf of Maine (go to Northeast Harbor on Mt. Desert Island and keep on going). It was built as SW Boatworks in Lamoine, back on the mainland at the entrance to Mt. Desert Island. And the sea trials were conducted at Billings Marine in Stonington on Deer Island on East Penobscot Bay. Enough…

Zeelander 55, Hinckley Dasher Win Best Powerboat Awards at Newport Show. Sabre 45 is People’s Choice By Peter A. Janssen The Dutch-made Zeelander 55, a gorgeous boat without a straight line anywhere, just won the Best Powerboat Over 35 feet award at the Newport International Boat Show. The judges said the boat was “all curves,” and presented an innovative approach to design. The Zeelander, pictured above, is a combination of a traditional Down East lobster boat and a 1930’s Gold Coast commuter boat, with a totally contemporary hull and performance. The award for Best Powerboat Under 35 feet went to…

New Hinckley Picnic Boat 37 MK111: Bigger, Better, Faster. See It at the Newport Show

The newest iteration of the iconic Picnic Boat, the new Hinckley 37 MK111 is larger, faster and more comfortable than ever before. The new 37 has all the gorgeous lines of the original, but it now offers a cruise speed of 32 knots and, powered by twin 370-hp Yanmar diesels and Hamilton jet drives, it tops out at 35 knots. Hinckley launched its first Picnic Boat, Dasher, in its yard in Southwest Harbor, Maine, in 1994. It was 36 feet long, driven by a single diesel and it had water jet drives, so that you wouldn’t snag a prop 0n…
