Nordhavn Building New 625 and 71 Passagemaker

Pacific Asian Enterprises, the parent company for Nordhavn, just announced that it is building two new models, a Nordhavn 625 and a Nordhavn 71.  The 625 is a variation on the current Nordhavn 60 hull, while the 71 is designed as a completely new, contemporary option for buyers in the 65- to 75-foot range. In the past few years, Nordhavn has experienced considerable success in moving the hull sizes for its various models forward; onward and upward. By refreshing existing hulls, the company is able to introduce updated, modern hulls. The new 625, for example, is based on the popular…

Changing Plans During Covid: A Year on Dirona

If you think the Covid pandemic caused a change of plans in your life last year, consider the cruising life of James and Jennifer Hamilton on their Nordhavn 52 Dirona. They started the year in Amsterdam and planned to go down to the Med, but Covid changed all that. They ended up spending 79 consecutive days on the boat in a harbor in southern Scotland, and finally, almost at the last moment, cruised across the North Sea to spend the winter in Norway. Plans change. In a review of the year, James wrote on their blog, mvdirona.com, that along with…

Nordhavn Building All-New 51 Long-Range Cruiser

Pacific Asian Enterprises, the parent company for Nordhavn, just announced that it’s building an all-new Nordhavn 51 long-range cruiser, a larger version of the 41 that it launched last summer. The new 51 will have two staterooms and two heads, a flybridge and an elevated pilothouse, all offering upgrades from the 41. The 51 will be built on a production line in Turkey, next to the 41. The two boats will offer a streamlined building process that does not allow for the individual customization that’s possible on other Nordhavn models. The 51 will be powered by twin 160-hp John Deere…

Owner’s Son, 13, Writes About Living on Nordhavn 47

If you want to raise your spirits during the pandemic, take a look at this blog by Salter Watson, who’s 13 years old and lives on a Nordhavn 47 named Spirited Away with his father, Alexander, where he’s “boat-schooling.” Salter says they’re into year two of a three-year plan, cruising in the Great Lakes, up and down the Atlantic Coast and, they hope, over to the Bahamas.  Here’s Salter’s latest blog: ANCHORING — WHAT I’VE LEARNED IN MY FIRST YEAR. When my dad bought our boat, a man told him “cruising is about finding exotic anchorages and fixing things.”  My…

Panama Posse, with 153 Boats, Starting in Mexico

The popular seven-month, 4,500 nm Panama Posse, a no-schedule, multi-route cruising odyssey from Mexico to Florida, kicks off this week from Barra de Navidad, Mexico. The rally was started in 2017 to promote safe cruising and to help boats navigate the Pacific Coast through the Panama Canal and up to Florida at the start of the cruising season. The first year the rally attracted 83 boats; the second year, 123 boats, and last year it had 178 boats. This year, with many cruisers worried about traveling during the pandemic, 153 boats have signed up. Initially, the rally was almost entirely…

Nordhavn Finishing New 80 with Vripack Interior

Nordhavn is working on its first new 80 with a sophisticated Scandinavian-style interior by Vripack, the Dutch design firm. It will be completed next year. The company has already finished hull number one of the 80, designed as a go-anywhere world cruiser that can be run by an owner-operator. Built at the South Coast yard  in Xiamen, China, the yacht will be ready for inspection by the end of the year at Nordhavn’s headquarters in Dana Point, California. The 80 is a departure for Nordhavn in that the company is collaborating with Vripack to create a new, more contemporary, European…

Nordhavns Notch Up 7 Million nm – and Counting

We all know that  Nordhavn owners like to go far. In fact, they’ve gone just about everywhere in the world, including going around it many times. But now we know exactly how far they’ve all gone – 7 million nautical miles, and that’s pretty far indeed. To track its owners’ progress, and the miles they put under their hulls, Nordhavn started a Distance Pennant program 12 years ago. Owners post their mileage, and earn a different pennant, as they go along, starting with 2,500 nm and then jumping up in 5,000 nm increments. So far, 487 owners have joined; many…

First Two Nordhavn 41s Heading for California

Nordhavn has just shipped the first two hulls of its new 41 world cruiser from the factory in Turkey. They are on their way to the company’s headquarters in Dana Point, California. The smallest vessel in Nordhavn’s fleet, the new 41 is the successor to the Nordhavn 40 that circled the globe in 2001 and 2002. Over the years, Nordhavn built 69 hulls of the 40, the company’s previous smallest passagemaker. It set the world record for a fastest circumnavigation by a production powerboat. So far, the 41 has become something of a home run for the company, setting records…

After One Baja Bash and 4,000 nm, Red Rover Comes Home

One Baja Bash and 4,000 nm later, Red Rover, the well-traveled 2005 Nordhavn 55, is back home in the United States after cruising in Mexico both before and during the time of coronavirus. Back in 2016, Kevin and Allison Jeffries, lifelong boaters, sold their house in Seattle and moved aboard Red Rover full time with their two shelter dogs, Zoe and Max. Their children were grown, and they’ve been cruising ever since. Last October, the Jeffries cruised down to Mexico; they went as far south as the far side of Puerto Vallarta before heading back to the Loreto in the…

Nordhavn Launches Long-Awaited 41 World Cruiser

Nordhavn just launched its new 41 entry-level passagemaker, the long-awaited successor to its world-circling 40, in the Aegean Sea off Turkey. Sea trials will start on Monday, and the boat is scheduled to be shipped to its new owner in the Northeastern part of the U.S. in mid-July. “We are very pleased with the way the boat has turned out,” said Drew Leishman, the 41’s project manager. The 41 is the smallest boat in the Nordhavn fleet, and it’s the only one made in Turkey. It has already found wide acceptance with cruisers around the world. Indeed, 14 of the…
