Orcas Spotted South of Nantucket

Orcas, it seems, are moving north. Last Sunday, a group of scientists from the New England Aquarium on an aerial survey spotted a pod of four orcas about 40 miles south of Nantucket. They were surprised to see orcas that far north; they usually stay in warmer water farther south. “It’s always unusual to see killer whales in New England waters,” said Orla O’Brien, who led the Aquarium’s team. Katherine McKenna, another scientist on the plane, said, “As we circled the area, two whales surfaced too quickly to tell what they were. On the third surfacing, we got a nice…

Yes, They Really Are Killer Whales

Orcas, aka killer whales even though they’re members of the dolphin family, really are vicious. In fact, a new study reports that a group of scientists actually saw more than a dozen orcas attack and kill a 70-foot blue whale off the southwest coast of Australia, the first time that such an attack has been recorded. The study was published last month in the journal Marine Mammal Science. It notes that scientists had known that orcas attacked and killed blue whales before, but they were always juvenile blue whales. (Blue whales are the largest creatures that ever lived, and can…

Good Samaritans, NOAA, Save Stranded Orca

A group of Good Samaritans, with some help from NOAA, helped rescue a 20-foot-long orca that was stranded on the rocks on Prince of Wales Island, just above Ketchikan in Alaska. They poured water on the 13-year-old orca for about six hours until the tide turned, and the whale, known as TD146D, a member of the West Coast transient orca population, was able to swim out to sea and rejoin its pod. The Coast Guard received the first call about the stranded whale at 9 in the morning. The orca was at least four feet above the waterline then, and the…

Orcas Behaving Badly, from Spain to Seattle. Videos

We’ve seen two different stories about Orcas interacting with boats lately. One, about an aggressive pod attack, came off the southern coast of Spain, and the other, a more refined interaction, came off Camano Island north of Seattle. You can see videos of both below. In the first story, a pod of about 30 orca whales circled and attacked the hull of a sailboat for two hours as it neared the Strait of Gibraltar. The three British sailors on board said they were afraid the 25-foot-long orcas would sink the boat. In fact, they damaged the rudder to the point…

Ben, an Orca Almost Left for Dead, Now Thriving

Ben, an orca in New Zealand, almost died twice more than two decades ago. First, he was stranded, then he was hit by a boat. But since then Ben has been thriving. He’s been spotted in 48 locations around New Zealand, and he’s traveled about 29,000 miles, roughly the distance around the world at the equator. Now he’s the subject of a chapter in a new book. Read about him here at stuff.co.nz:  An orca who has twice dodged death is proving to be a poster boy for researchers thanks to the scars of his adventures. Ben the orca is…

Why Are Orcas Attacking Boats Off Spain?

Orcas, aka killer whales, have attacked several boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal in the past few months, and marine scientists are trying to figure out why. The black and white orcas, the largest in the dolphin family, are high intelligent social animals. They’re also very powerful; an adult male can grow to be 26 feet long and weigh 10,000 pounds. They often play in the bow waves of boats. But in the past two months several captains of boats off Spain and Portugal have issued distress calls after orcas have damaged their vessels. One attack, off Cape…

Orca Who Carried Dead Calf Gives Birth Again

Here’s a story with a happy ending, from The New York Times: An orca that once spent 17 days carrying her dead calf — a dramatic saga of apparent mourning — has become a mother once again. The orca, identified by researchers as J35 and also known as Tahlequah, became a symbol in 2018 of the plight of the Southern Resident whales, which were 88 in number when they were listed as endangered in 2005 and have dwindled further since then. The birth of the new orca, which was seen for the first time by researchers on Saturday, brings the…

New York Times: An Orca, Her Dead Calf and Us

Here’s a good explanation about why the story of Tahlequah, the mother orca whale who’s been carrying her dead calf on what researchers call a “grief tour” of the San Juan Islands for more than ten days, resonates so clearly with us. The author, Susan Casey, writes: “To learn the orcas’ natural and cultural history is to understand how closely connected a mother and calf are, how tight-knot their bond. Like us, orcas are self-aware, cognitively skilled individuals that communicate using their pod’s signature dialect. Unlike us, their core identity is communal: It encompasses not just themselves, but their family…

Orca Whale Population Threatened and Declining in Pacific Northwest; Not a Single Calf Born in Last Three Years

The orca whale population in the Pacific Northwest is in trouble. Not a single calf has been born in the past three years; normally four or five would be born each year. The overall orca population, numbering about 100 in the last 1990s, is now down to about 75. And researchers are worried that female orcas are aging out of their reproducing years and can’t be replaced. The largest problem has been the disappearance of big Chinook king salmon. Orcas usually eat 30 of them a day.  And then there are man-made problems. The underwater world, particularly the Haro Strait,…

Absolutely Great Video and Still Pictures of a Pod of Orcas Swimming 20 Miles Off San Diego

Here are some of the best whale pictures I’ve ever seen, both video and stills, taken by a San Diego marine photographer about 20 miles offshore on a beautiful, clear, blue day. Dominic Biagini, of La Jolla, who works for Captain Dave’s Dolphin Safaris, a whale-watching business on Dana Point, took something of a busman’s holiday when a friend was visiting recently from Chicago. He took the friend out on a private boat in search of whales. As he told Fox 5 in the story below, after an hour or so they came across a pod of six orcas, swimming by…
