Phuket Opens Again for Cruising, Charters

Phuket, the largest island in Thailand and one of the world’s most exotic cruising and charter destinations, is open again. And the Moorings charter base there also is open, with sail and power charters available. With a heavy reliance on tourism, Thailand’s economy took a big hit during the worst of the pandemic, and the country was off-limits to a lot of foreign travelers. The scenery in this exotic part of the world can be stunning, with towering limestone cliffs, secluded coves, pristine white-sand beaches and a mix of uninhabited islands and resort nightlife. The scuba diving and snorkeling are simply spectacular. Cruising there, in the Andaman Sea, is easy; navigation is usually line of sight. You’ll need to keep an eye on your charts and GPS to avoid the coral reefs, and the tidal range can exceed eight…

If you want to cruise in a tropical paradise, where most of the navigation is still line of sight and where moorings are plentiful and the people are friendly, Thailand should be at the top of your list. The island of Phuket, off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman…

Get Away from It All in the Similan Islands of Thailand

If you really want to get away from it all, head for the Similan Islands, a chain of nine small islands about 50 miles from Phuket in Thailand. They’re the home of incredible landscapes, spectacular diving and not a whole lot of other people. The Similans are numbered one through nine, going from north to south, and they’re a national park in the Andaman Sea. You can swim in the turquoise waters of all of them, but you can only step foot on the white sandy beaches of Number Four, which has simple bamboo bungalows, and Number Eight, the largest…
