Sunreef Building New Line of Fast Ultima Cats

Sunreef, which has been making luxury catamarans in Poland for the past 20 years, just announced that it’s building a new Ultima line of fast, high-tech, hybrid cats, starting with a 45 and a 55. Francis Lapp, the yard’s founder and president, said the new cats will have “the ultimate hull shape for all those who are looking to enjoy quick getaways in speed, comfort, and style.” The new line, he said, is “all about fast cruises, vast living space, and energy efficiency.” The new cats have sleek, aerodynamic lines and bulwarks that fold down from the aft decks to…

Prestige Unveils New 65-Foot Power Cat

Prestige, the upscale French builder, is doubling down on its power catamaran line. It launched its first power cat, the M48, last summer. Now, it says it’s making a new M8 that’s 65 feet long and has as much room as a five-bedroom house. The new M8 will have  the same semi-planing hull as the M48, with the same profile designed to look like a monohull. Its 19-foot beam is large enough to provide a lot of room inside and outside the boat, but it’s relatively narrow in terms of a 65-foot cat. The foredeck on the M8 is unusual;…

Cats Rule in Miami

Power catamarans have grown in number and in popularity in the past few years, and those trends are getting a big boost at the Miami show this week. Here’s a fast look at some of the new breed that made their debuts at the show: Even before the show officially opened on Wednesday morning, Aquila celebrated the global debut of its new 42 power catamaran (see picture) at the show’s Herald Plaza site. Designed by VPLP, the French naval architects, the new 42 has two cabins (with en suite heads), although it can be configured for three or four. The…

VisionF Making New 100-foot Cat with Kevlar

VisionF, the fairly new Turkish yard, just announced that it’s building a massive, luxurious 100-foot-long power catamaran, the flagship of its growing fleet. The new VisionF 100 will be built out of Kevlar composite, instead of the aluminum used in the previous yachts. The yard is using Kevlar in the new 100 because of its strength and light weight. It’s also strong and rigid. The yacht is powered by four 900-hp Volvo IPS1050 pod drives, delivering a top speed of 22 knots. Its draft of just 3’ 9” means it can safely go in the shallow waters of the Bahamas…

New Silent 120 Cat Has Airplane, Submarine

Silent Yachts has just taken the idea of adventure or explorer yachts to an entirely new level by announcing that its new 120 Explorer will have both a vertical takeoff and landing airplane and a personal submarine. The all-electric powered catamaran also will have trans-oceanic capabilities and virtually unlimited range. The plane, an eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) named the XP4, is made by the British startup VRCO. It can hold four people, cruise at 160 knots, and fly for an hour. Large solar panels on the yacht’s roof slide out to port and starboard to open a touch-and-go…

C-Dory TomCat: Stable Pocket Cruiser

If you’re thinking about an outboard-powered pocket cruiser, the 25-foot C-Dory TomCat has a lot going for it. Per its name, the C-Dory TomCat is a catamaran, so it has a cat’s stability and space; indeed, the cockpit is a full 7 feet long and 7 feet wide, not bad for a 25-foot boat. And the twin outboards are mounted pretty far apart on the transom, so docking and low-speed maneuvering are relatively painless. The ride is flat and fairly dry, and the TomCat doesn’t bank in turns. You can run it up on a beach for a picnic, if…

Archipelago Expanding Its Expedition Fleet

Archipelago, the new builder of ocean-crossing, expedition-class power catamarans, just announced that it’s expanding its fleet. The UK builder launched its first vessel, a 47-foot aluminum-hulled cat with a 3,000-nm range, last summer. Now, it’s completing designs for a new 38, a new 52 (see rendering above), and ultimately a new 60. Founded just two years ago, Archipelago is planning ahead. The company says the new cats will share “the same philosophy as the original Archipelago 47 with sea-keeping at their very heart, and attainable luxury built as standard.” On its web site, the company also says, “Each of these…

Bluegame Unveils New Power Cat Lineup

Bluegame just announced that it’s building a new line of luxury multihull yachts, called BGM, that will start with a highly creative 75 and include Volvo’s hybrid diesel-electric powertrain. Bluegame, part of Italy’s Sanlorenzo Group, unveiled plans for the new BGM75 at the Cannes Yachting Festival; the boat is scheduled to be ready for the same event next September. It was designed by Philippe Briand, the London-based, performance-oriented naval architect. The idea was to create the space and efficiency of a multihull with the style of a monohull. The BGM75 has a relatively narrow beam for a 75-foot power cat,…

Longreach 44 Power Cat “Ticks All the Boxes”

Looking for a long-range, comfortable power catamaran, an experienced cruising couple from Las Vegas have just bought a Longreach 44 in Australia. They plan to take delivery next spring and keep the boat in Seattle in the summer and San Diego in the winter. The couple, Chad and Maren Schwartz, filmed a video with Longreach at the Sydney boat show. (A new company, Longreach is based just outside Sydney.) They said they originally wanted to cruise around the world, but had trouble finding the right boat. They decided they wanted a catamaran platform for its comfortable ride. About four years…

Sunreef Building New 55 Open Power

Sunreef just announced that it’s building a new 55 Open Power, a luxury hybrid catamaran with a blend of speed, stability and comfort. With low-slung, modern, aggressive lines, the Sunreef 55 almost demands that you take a second look. The cabin roof slopes forward to enhance a sense of motion, and the cat is marked by its reverse bows and a slash of windows along the lower hull sides that provide a lot of interior light to the cabins on the accommodations deck below. But it’s when the boat stops that it’s really eye-catching. The bulwarks on both sides of…
