Maine Man Rescued After Missed Calls

Last Sunday afternoon, a mid-coast Maine man took his skiff out to retrieve parts of his dock that had been washed away by a storm. Somehow, the skiff turned over, and he was thrown into the frigid water near Tenants Harbor. As it turns out, a Facebook posting that he had shared with friends, just to tell them what he was up to that afternoon, plus a missed check-in call with his wife, probably saved his life The rescue started when the man’s wife said he missed a check-in call at 4:15. She called him again and again, but her…

NOAA Saved 350 Lives in U.S. Last Year

Here’s some good news from NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: NOAA’s satellites, known for their pivotal role in tracking weather and climate, were behind the rescue of 350 people from harrowing, life-threatening ordeals in the U.S. and its surrounding waters in 2023. NOAA’s polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites are part of the global Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking system, or COSPAS-SARSAT, which uses a network of U.S. and international spacecraft to detect and locate distress signals sent from 406MHz emergency beacons onboard aircraft, boats and handheld Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) anywhere in the world. Since its start in…

Volunteers Rescue 8 from Chesapeake

A volunteer crew from Northern Virginia rescued eight people after their 50-foot Carver sank in the Chesapeake last weekend. The eight people had huddled together in the 49-degree water while the all-volunteer Smith Point Sea Rescue crew and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for them. After the rescue, the Coast Guard said the three women and five men were “in states of mild to moderate hypothermia” but they all were released in stable condition after treatment by local EMS crews. The rescue started when someone on board the Nauti Dream, a 50-foot Carver, placed a 911 call on their cell…

Rescue Boat Sinks, Crew is Rescued

Here’s something you don’t see very often: A fire department rescue boat sank during a training exercise in the Chesapeake and the crew had to be rescued themselves. All four people on board, who were wearing life jackets and survival suits, were back on duty that evening. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department says they don’t know why their boat sank. It was refloated a few days later. The problem started when Fire Department Boat #1, based in Shady Side, Maryland, started to take on water off Gibson Island and the crew had to abandon ship. The Coast Guard and…

Boat Sinks in Marlin Tournament. See Rescue Video

The 48th annual White Marlin Open, the world’s largest billfish tournament, started on Monday morning in Ocean City, Maryland, with 421 boats competing for a record $9 million in prize money. At 10:30, Knot Stressin’, a 34-foot Pursuit and one of the competitors, sent out a Mayday call saying its engine room was flooding and all six men on board were abandoning ship. It was about 60 miles offshore. The Coast Guard heard the call and sent out an 87-foot patrol boat and a 47-foot lifeboat. Outer Reef Owner Rescues 5: His Story

Nick and Robin, experienced cruisers, took delivery of their new Outer Reef 610 motoryacht Silver Skye last year. Earlier this summer, when Nick was cruising from Brielle, New Jersey, to Quincy, Massachusetts, with his friend Kurt, he ended up on a rescue mission. Here’s his first-hand account: “Last Friday, as we were traveling from Hadley Harbor (a New England anchorage and cruising ground south of Cape Cod) in the Elizabeth Islands to Quincy, Massachusetts, I spotted what I initially thought was an individual on a jet ski. “As I looked closer, I saw that he was waving frantically. I changed…

Father, Son Rescue MOB 40 Miles Offshore

Sascha Scheller is a lucky man. He fell off his fishing boat 40 miles off Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, recently, when he lost his footing while relieving himself. He had been fishing by himself. As he hit the water, he saw his boat going off without him. About two hours later, Scheller was saved by a father-and-son team, who also had been out fishing, found his empty boat, and were able to use GPS tracking to help figure out where Scheller might be. Andrew Sherman, 50, and his son, Jack, 21, are ardent fisherman. They’re from Roanoke, Virginia, but spend…

Three men were rescued from an uninhabited island in the South Pacific after searchers saw the giant SOS they had written on the beach. The men had been missing for three days after their 23-foot boat ran out of fuel and they drifted 118 miles from their intended destination in Micronesia east of the Philippines. The men set out from Pulawat Atoll and intended to go just 26 miles to Pulap Atoll. They ended up on tiny Pikelot Island, where they wrote the SOS in the sand that saved their lives. When the men didn’t arrive at Pulap, their families…

Boat Starts to Sink; Coast Guard Rescues Three Men, Two Dogs

I’m partial, but I’ve always got to hand it to the Coast Guard for being there when you need them. Latest example: When the Coast Guard near New Orleans got a call that a powerboat was sinking off Dauphin Island, Alabama, they launched a 45-foot fast response boat and two helicopters. The rescue boat got there first and plucked three men and two dogs from the water. If you look the picture, I think you’d agree that the Coast Guard got there just in time. http://coastguardnews.com/coast-guard-rescues-3-people-2-dogs/2016/10/12/
