Sabre Building New 43 SE with Volvo IPS

Earlier this week, Sabre announced that it’s planning a new 43 Salon Express, an updated classic Down-East styled cruiser that will replace the recently retired Sabre 42 Salon Express. The 40- to 45-foot range is a winner for Sabre. Indeed, the company has built more than 660 yachts in that size range since it launched the first Sabre 42 sailboat in 1987. While keeping true to Sabre’s made-in-Maine heritage, the new 43 has some state-of-the-art innovations. It’s the first full-network Sabre under 58 feet, for example, where owners can check critical functions and control any circuit on the boat from…

Back Cove Reimagines Popular 37 Down-East Cruiser

Back Cove just announced that it was giving a facelift to the popular 37-foot Down East Cruiser that it first introduced in 2009. The new boat, called the 372, will still have the same lines as the original, but it also will have some new amenities and improvements that will make both cruising and living on board easier and more appealing. The original Back Cove 37 was a classic cruiser, with a single diesel, low profile and modern lobster-boat lines. The problem was, it was too popular. Back Cove, in Rockland, Maine, has sold more than 200 of them; the…

Fall Boat Show Special: Boats 51 Feet and Up

Here’s a look at just some of the new cruising boats, 51 feet and up, that, in normal times, you’d probably see at the fall boat shows this year: KROGEN EXPRESS 52 Even with a flying bridge and raised pilothouse, the Krogen Express 52 manages to carry a classic low profile, enhanced by a long, flowing sheer line that emphasizes the boat’s distinctive profile. And the “Express” part of its name is not a misnomer: With twin 480-hp Yanmars the Krogen Express tops out at about 22 knots. Dial back to 8 knots and the boat has a range of…

New Sabre 58: A Big and Quiet Down East Cruiser

After following its launch and super-extended break-in cruise from Portland, Maine, down to Miami in time for the yacht show there, I had been looking forward to seeing the new Sabre 58 Salon Express in person. And once I climbed on board the boat at the show, it was more than worth the wait. I already knew the boat’s lines. It is a contemporary classic with a clean Down East look, fitting well into Sabre’s made-in-Maine heritage. But once I was on board, I realized how big this new cruiser really is; it has lots of usable room to make…

Miami Shows Open, Lots of Cruising Boat Debuts

The big Miami boat shows have just started, and I’ve already found my next boat, or rather my next half dozen boats. (In my dreams, of course.) And considering that there are 1,800 boats here, displayed at the yacht show downtown and the boat show on Virginia Key, I still have a way to go. I’ve been fortunate enough to have already climbed on half a dozen boats making their debuts here, just enough to whet my appetite for more, and to rekindle my taste for adventure. Standing at the helm of the brand-new, beautiful Sabre 58 Salon Express, which…

The boat is expected to have a top speed of 37 knots, and a cruising range of more than 300 nm at its cruising speed. The Maine company says that it will offer optional outboard power that will push the Back Cove 390 up to the 40-knot range.
