Volvo To Stop Making Seven Marine Outboards

For the past several years, the outboard business has been on a tear. The demand for new outboards, even on traditional cruising boats, often outpaced supply. Yamaha couldn’t make its popular large outboards fast enough. Mercury upped its game and produced new outboards that became the power of choice even on such Down East boats at Hinckley and MJM. Suzuki stepped up its presence in the U.S. Three years ago, Volvo Penta, the Swedish giant, bought Seven Marine, a U.S. startup, and it started production of the entire Seven Marine lineup (527-hp, 577-hp, and 627-hp models)  last February in Tennessee.…

New HCB 65: World’s Largest, and Most Luxurious, Center Console

The new HCB 65 Estrella is more than just the world’s largest center console, even if you can get your mind around a 65-foot-long center console with five mammoth Seven Marine outboards producing 3,135 horsepower. The HCB 65 defies traditional boat definitions. It’s in a class by itself. It’s a statement. It’s also head-turning. Who wouldn’t take a second look at the HCB 65 as runs into a harbor or ties up at a marina? It’s even awesome enough to get some Hollywood screen time, making a guest appearance on Showtime’s Billions. In case you’re wondering, the HCB itself doesn’t…

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 35 (pictured above), the Tactical T-40 and Raymarine’s ClearCruise Augmented Reality all just won Best in Show awards at the Vancouver International Boat Show in British Columbia. The awards, now in their fifth year, were given by Pacific Yachting magazine. Beneteau’s Swift Trawler 35 won the award for Best Powerboat 39 Feet and Under. The judges said it seemed larger than its 35 feet and liked its innovative use of space, particularly the head with enclosed shower and the walk-around forward berth. They noted that the 35 was Beneteau’s effort to improve its most popular model, the…

Volvo Turns to Outboards. Are Hybrids Next? Will your transom look like this, with a total of 2,508 horsepower coming from four Seven Marine outboards? Well, the answer is yes, if Volvo Penta has anything to say about it. Volvo just announced that it is entering the rapidly growing outboard market by buying the majority stake in Seven Marine, which Volvo Penta President Bjorn Ingemanson calls “the leader in the high-powered outboard market.” In a conference call, Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas, said, “Now the idea is to make some of the most exciting outboards ever…
