New Bitter End Inflatable SUP; Fits in a Backpack

Before it was devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September, 2017, the Bitter End Yacht Club was one of the most sought-after, and highly recognized, destinations in the British Virgin Islands. The Bitter End has been rebuilding its 64 acres since then, but in the interim it has launched Bitter End Provisions, “to help you prepare for your next nautical adventure.” The company says the criteria for something to qualify as a Bitter End Provision are that “It works hard and works often. That it has been tested at sea. And that it pairs really well with a bottle…

New BOTE Inflatable SUP Comes with 6-hp Outboard, Fits in a Bag

The wave of stand-up paddle boards has swept through recreational boating all across the United States in the past few years. SUPs are everywhere; they’re so popular that a lot of cruising boats now come with cabintop racks to hold them. But just when you thought you’ve seen all there is to see in SUPs, BOTE has come up with something new: an inflatable SUP with a 6-hp Mercury outboard. New Upscale SUP from Designers of $25,000 Kayak

Now, from the same people who brought you an over-the-top $25,000 one-person, carbon-fiber kayak with gold-plated fittings, comes a totally upscale stand-up paddleboard built to the same standards. Five years ago, New Zealand designers McLellan Jacobs (Jamie McLellan and Andy Jacobs, who both happen to be boaters) introduced Kayak 1, with the gold, carbon fiber and teak, at the Monaco yacht show. It was 12’10” long with a 2’7” beam and weighed only 40 pounds. Kayak 1, with its singular good looks, was an instant hit with the superyacht set. Some people ordered them with wooden inlays in the teak…

Chris Bertish Crosses Atlantic on SUP, Solo, in 93 Days Whatever you do, don’t bet against Chris Bertish, a 42-year-old South African with a will-power that just won’t quit.  After all, what are the odds that anyone, even someone with several world records, will paddle a 20-foot-long SUP across the Atlantic Ocean, from Morocco to Antigua, all by himself and without any assistance. But that’s what Bertish just did, covering 4,050 miles in 93 days, starting in Agadir, Morocco, and ending up in English Harbour, Antigua. Along the way, Bertish figured he took 2,008,800 strokes (but who’s counting). “It took…

The Right Stuff

How’s this for a trans-Atlantic adventure? Chris Bertish, a 42-year-old world champion surfer, just left Morocco on a SUP (although a very tricked-out SUP) and plans to arrive in Miami some four months and 4,600 miles from now with stops in the Canaries and the BVI along the way. Oh, and Bertish, who’s already set some SUP distance records, will be doing this solo, all by himself, with no support from anyone at all. The last time anyone tried to do a solo trans-Atlantic on an SUP a year ago he had to be rescued after less than a day…
