Beneteau Unveils New Swift Trawler 54

Beneteau just announced that it’s building a totally new Swift Trawler 54 that will make its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September before coming to the U.S. The new boat, with three staterooms, two heads, and an unusual amount of glazing to provide light throughout the salon and the accommodations deck below, will be powered by two 550-hp diesels with a top speed of 20 knots, and a range of 800 nm at 9 knots. It has a new “fusion” hull by Bill Dixon that is supposed to be fuel efficient and seaworthy while providing more interior volume.…

New Rhea 34 Trawlers Heading to U.S.

Rhea Marine’s Trawler 34, made in France, is now heading for the United States, with two boats going to Cardinal Yacht Sales in Bellingham, Washington. The Rhea 34 has a conventional trawler layout, with two cabins, one head, and either one diesel or two. As a former trawler (Grand Banks) owner, I found a few things appealing in the new Rhea. It has a door on each side of the salon, providing immediate access to both sides decks. This is an great help in docking (which I often did by myself), as well as providing more fresh air and ventilation…

Beneteau Building Long-Range Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau is doubling down on the trawler market, and is now building hull number one of a Grand Trawler 62, a long-range vessel with a full-displacement hull made for safe, comfortable (and slow) cruising. The new Grand Trawler 62 follows on the popularity of Beneteau’s Swift Trawler line, which now runs from 30 to 50 feet. But while they have semi-displacement hulls and cruise easily in the 15-16 knot range, the new 62 is most efficient cruising at 9 knots, where it has a 900-nm range. Powered by twin 730-hp MAN diesels with straight shafts, the new 62 will be…

Helmsman Trawler 38E Wins People’s Choice Award in Seattle

The  Helmsman Trawler 38E just won the People’s Choice Award at Seattle Trawlerfest, quite an honor considering there were 45 other boats, from 23 to 72 feet, lining the docks there. The 38E is Helmsman’s most popular model, with a raised pilothouse, flybridge, large master cabin and a full-beam salon. Helmsman Trawlers are built in Fuzhou, China, and are designed for owners who want a quality cruising boat but don’t want to overpay for one. The Helmsman line runs from 31 to 43 feet, and the boats all provide classic trawler amenities and coastal cruising possibilities. They are particularly popular…

New Norseman 48: A Traditional Trawler Layout with Teak and Twin Yanmars

Walking down a dock filled with trawlers and Downeast boats at the recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, something new (at least new to me) caught my eye. There, in an area filled with Sabres, Grand Banks, MJMs and Hinckleys, was a Norseman 48, a traditional-looking trawler with clean and classic lines that was almost beckoning me to step aboard. This Norseman, brought to the show by Schooner Yachts of Fort Lauderdale, is a twin-diesel, two-stateroom, two-head relatively fast trawler with a standard trawler layout and enough teak to keep a traditional trawler owner happy. Powered by two 440-hp Yanmars,…

New Bracewell 41 Trawler Makes East Coast Debut in Annapolis; Based on Hull from Camano 41

The new Bracewell 41 trawler, built from the tooling for the popular Camano 41, will make its east coast debut at the Annapolis powerboat show, starting Oct. 11. The Bracewell has already been shown in Seattle. The new two-stateroom Bracewell uses Camano’s seaworthy hull and keel design, with its low center of gravity, and it include lots of upgrades for more comfort and aesthetics. Powered by a standard 435-hp Volvo diesel or a 480-hp Cummins, the Bracewell cruises efficiently in the 8- to 16-knot range. The boat has a pronounced bow flare to knock down spray. The side decks are…

New Great Harbour TT35: An Outboard-Powered Trawler that You Can Trailer Anywhere

The new Great Harbour TT35, which will be launched at the Annapolis powerboat show starting Oct. 12, combines two growing trends: Outboard power, and trailerability. It’s designed to pack in all the comforts of a single-stateroom, liveaboard trawler with the ease, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of an outboard-powered boat that can be launched and retrieved and then trailered to cruising grounds all around the U.S. and Canada. The new Great Harbour has home-like amenities, including a queen island berth in the master stateroom, a full-featured galley and a large head with a separate shower. The salon can hold extra guests for…

Azimut Magellano 66: A Cruising Boat with Italian Style

The Azimut Magellano line is something of a cross between traditional trawler-type cruising boats – think Fleming or Grand Banks – and the more trendy styling you usually associate with first-rate Italian builders. Here’s a good look at the new Azimut Magellano 66. http://www.mby.com/reviews/trawler-yachts/azimut-magellano-66-review

Circling the Atlantic, Heading Home

Sean and Lois Johnson, two Brits with a lot of salt water in their veins, are now in the Dominican Republic on their Nordhavn 64, Kapowai, after a circumnavigation of the Atlantic – from Miami up to Canada, across to Europe, and then back to the Caribbean. They had already crossed the Atlantic twice since they bought Kapowai just two years ago. If you’re interested in learning about long-range cruising from the people who’ve been there, here’s their latest blog postings before they head back to Miami.http://www.kapowaicruising.com
