Grand Banks Building New Flagship 85, a Long-Range Cruiser

Grand Banks is building its new 85-foot flagship at its factory in Malaysia. The new highly efficient, long-range cruiser is scheduled to be delivered to its new owner by Christmas, in time for him to watch the next America’s Cup in New Zealand next year. The new 85, with its low profile, long sheerline and gorgeous tumblehome, comes after the successful launch of the Grand Banks 60 and 60 Skylounge models. With its 22-foot beam, the 85 will have lots of wide-open space, inside and out, for comfortable living and on-board entertaining. Powered by a pair of 1,000-hp Volvo IPS1350…

The Cruising Life: Bumfuzzle in the DR

Patrick Schulte and his family just reached Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on Bumfuzzle, their 1986 Grand Banks 42, continuing their cruising life in the Caribbean. When we last checked with them, they were in the Caymans at the start of the year. Since then they’ve gone down to Jamaica, and then over to the DR. It took the Schultes, Pat, his wife Ali, their daughter Quest, 10, and son, Lowe, 8, about 48 hours to go from Port Antonio, Jamaica, to Santo Domingo. They waited for a three-day weather window, and then left early in the morning, helped…

Increasingly Popular Palm Beach Show Opens March 26

The Palm Beach International Boat Show, which has been growing in size and importance the past few years, starts on Thursday, March 26, and runs through Sunday, March 29. A handful of significant cruising powerboats will make their debuts there this year, while hundreds more will be on display. Now in its  35th year, the Palm Beach show has become increasingly popular because of its location and its manageable size. The show’s on Flagler Drive on West Palm Beach, where downtown meets the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s easy to get to, with lots of nearby parking, and it doesn’t have all…

Bumfuzzle Moves On, Cruising in the Caymans

When we last heard from the Schulte family, they were waiting out the hurricane season up Rio Dulce in Guatemala. But now a new season has started, and they’re on their way again. The Schultes, Pat, Ali, their daughter Ouest, 10, and son Lowe, 8, just reached Little Cayman Island on their 1986 Grand Banks 42 Bumfuzzle, and they’re happy to be there. In late November, the Schultes, from St. Paul, Minnesota, topped off their fuel tanks, giving them about a 1,000 nm range, and headed out into the Caribbean, staying a while in Roatan, the largest of Honduras’ Bay…

Palm Beach Motoryachts Will Launch New GT60 in Miami

The new Palm Beach GT60, with the same low profile, long sheer and elegant tumblehome as other Palm Beach models, will debut at the Miami Yacht Show, starting Feb. 13. It follows the launch of the GT50 Open at Miami last year, and the GT50 Salon Express at the Newport, Rhode Island, show in September, 2018. The GT50 Salon Express was named Best New Powerboat at that show; the judges said the beautiful, fast and light Palm Beach motoryacht was just plain “sexy.” The new GT60 has all the same lines and heritage as the GT50, except it’s ten feet…

Bumfuzzle Cruises Up the Rio Dulce in Guatemala for Hurricane Season

There won’t be any more blue salt water for Bumfuzzle, the well-traveled 1984 Grand Banks 42 owned by Patrick Schulte and his wife, Ali, for a while. The boat’s now on the definitely green and fresh water of Rio Dulce in Guatemala, surrounded by a steamy tropical rain forest, and they’ll stay there for the rest of the hurricane season. The Schultes and their children, Ouest, 9, and Lowe, 7, cruised down to Mexico from Key West six months ago. When we last checked in with them in April, they were heading south from Isla Mujeres, looking for a change…

Grand Banks Working on Elegant and Efficient New 54; Will Launch in September

Grand Banks has started construction on its new 54, an elegant, efficient two-or-three stateroom cruiser that will make its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival next September. In earlier announcements, Grand Banks had called the new boat a 52, but it’s grown a bit. It also comes in the middle of a growth spurt for iconic builder, following on the heels of the Grand Banks 60 and Grand Banks 60 Skylounge. The new 54 also will have the high-tech, lightweight, warped-hull design as that on the 60; it stays in the water and leaves little wake throughout the speed range.…
