After Three Months in Mexico, the Schultes Head South on Their Grand Banks 42 Bumfuzzle

After three months in Mexico, Pat Schulte, his wife Ali, daughter Ouest, 9, and son Lowe, 7, are heading south on their 1986 Grand Banks 42 Bumfuzzle, continuing to live the dream, no matter what country they’re in. They arrived in Isla Mujeres from Key West in January. Pat took the boat over by himself since Ali and the kids were back home in Minnesota visiting family. (That wasn’t exactly the way they planned it, but a weather window opened up, and he took advantage of it.) They enjoyed their time there, touring the Yucatan, celebrating Carnaval (it was pretty…

In a Growth Mode, Grand Banks Starts Work on New 85 Flagship

Grand Banks has started work on its new 85, the largest Grand Banks ever, in its factory in Malaysia. The company is definitely in a growth mode. Mark Richards, the Grand Banks CEO, announced at the Fort Lauderdale show in November that the factory was starting work on a new 52 that will be launched at the Newport show in September. And earlier this year Grand Banks launched its new 60 Skylounge, after the successful introduction of a 60 flybridge version. The big, new 85 flagship will come in both a flybridge and skylounge version. And its 22-foot beam creates…

NW Explorations Adds a Flagship Nordhavn 60 to Its Charter Fleet

Northwest Explorations, the charter company in Bellingham, Washington, that specializes in running summer flotillas to Alaska, the San Juans and Desolation Sound, just added a 60-foot Nordhavn to its 18-boat fleet. Puffin Quest is the first Nordhavn and the largest boat in the Northwest fleet, which has more Grand Banks than any other brand. Puffin Quest, like all Nordhavns, is a true blue-water expedition boat (a Nordhavn 40 circled the globe in 2001 and 2002), and is powered by a single 330-hp John Deere diesel. It cruises at 8 knots and tops out at 10 knots. The boat also has an 80-hp…

New Grand Banks 52: A Long-Range, Smooth-Running, High-Tech Cruiser

Grand Banks just announced that they are building a new 52, a long-range cruiser with a high-tech, slippery, 30-knot hull that will be launched at the Newport, Rhode Island, boat show next September. The GB 52 will be the latest in the newly reinvigorated Grand Banks lineup, coming after the Grand Banks 60 and Grand Banks 60 Skylounge. Mark Richards, the company’s president and CEO, made the announcement at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. “The 52 will combine weight reduction, strength and a low vertical center of gravity,” he said. “Of course, efficiency doesn’t matter without comfort, so we…

Fort Lauderdale Report: First Day at FLIBS By Peter A. Janssen Walking down the Beneteau dock at the opening day of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was like running into a new, improved version of an old friend. I could almost hear the new Beneteau 47 Swift Trawler, which was making its U.S. debut at the show, calling my name. After all, I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for Beneteau’s Swift Trawler line ever since I took one around part of the Great Loop a few years ago. But that was a two-cabin, single-diesel 34. The new…

72 Boats Cruise Up to Puget Sound Grand Banks Owners Association Rendezvous in Roche Harbor

Some 72 boats, and 200 owners, guests and sponsors turned out for the Puget Sound Grand Banks Owners Association rendezvous at Roche Harbor in the San Juan Islands, one of the most successful events the organization has ever held. This year the rendezvous had a Jimmy Buffett theme, and during the course of the rendezvous most people managed to tackle a margarita or two and enjoy a Cheeseburger in Paradise lunch. Almost everyone attended the workshops, seminars, dinners, dances and cooking demos. Even an early-morning BOGA (boat yoga) session was popular. The weather was great, and the Grand Banks owners…

Cruising the Bahamas on Bumfuzzle: The Schulte Family Stays on the Move By Peter A. Janssen Pat Schulte says that he and his wife Ali are “not ones to settle down.” That’s a considerable understatement. In fact, ever since they quit their jobs in Chicago in 2003, they’ve been on the move, sailing around the world, driving from Alaska to Argentina, and now cruising the Bahamas on their 1986 Grand Banks 42 Bumfuzzle with their two children. And loving every minute of it. While he was still in college in Chicago, Schulte started working in the commodities pit as trader.…

Grand Banks Building First New 60 with a Skylounge

Grand Banks is moving up. After the successful launch of its new, highly acclaimed 60 last year, it is now building the first 60 Skylounge with a totally enclosed upper pilothouse in its factory in Malaysia. The boat is scheduled to be launched this summer. The 60 Skylounge offers more living space above the bridge deck, and 360-degree unobstructed views while cruising or on the hook. Laid up with fully infused carbon fiber, the Skylounge keeps the 60’s graceful proportions and lines, while essentially adding another deck to the boat’s classic profile. The original 60, which comes with a flybridge,…

New Eastbay 44, a Success in the U.S., Is Being Introduced to Europe at Boot Dusseldorf

Grand Banks is introducing its iconic Downeast-styled Eastbay 44 to the European market on Jan. 21 at Boot Dusseldorf, one of the largest boat shows in the world. The Eastbay 44 has been shown in the U.S. for the past year, amid rave reviews. With its low profile, long sheer, and typical Downeast tumblehome, the new 44 – the first Grand Banks built since Mark Richards, the founder of Palm Beach Yachts, was hired to run both companies – is a thoroughly contemporary version of a traditional Grand Banks. It has all the teak, world-class fit-and-finish and classic lines of…
