Former Music Exec and Wife Take Dream Cruise on New Sabre 48 Last September, Jerry Ade, a former music talent agency executive and real estate developer, and his wife, Marci, bought their dream boat, a Sabre 48 flybridge, from DiMillo’s in Portland, Maine. They named it Famous (Ade had been president of the Famous Artists Agency in New York, representing Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and The Beastie Boys, among others), and they headed down the coast to deliver it to their home in Naples, Florida. But weather, and a fuel problem, got in the way, and they ran out of time in…

Sabre’s Latest: Dirigo 66 Flybridge, Now Heading for Florida

Sabre has just completed the first flybridge version of its 66 Dirigo, and the Maine-built boat is on its way to its new owners in Florida. The company launched the very first 66 (pictured above) more than a year ago and I was fortunate enough to be on the final leg of its delivery, also in Florida. My conclusion: That Downeast beauty is one of my favorite boats, both for its overall cruising performance and comfort, and for its classic good looks, inside and out. I wrote at the time that the first Dirigo was ready for superlatives, since…

Report from Palm Beach: “The Best of the Season.” Traditionally, the Palm Beach boat show is a buyer’s show; a lot of people, so the thinking goes, look at the Miami shows, but then a month later they actually buy in Palm Beach. The Palm Beach show, which just ended, certainly had a lot of the major cruising boats that had already been displayed in Miami, but it also had some new ones, including the Vicem 46IPS from Turkey and the Minorca 34 from Spain, while the new Sabre 45 (from Maine, of course) was undergoing sea trials just up…

New Sabre 45 Turns in Impressive Performance in First Sea Trial. See Video.

Here’s a first look, an on-board video, of the new Sabre 45 Salon Express, in its initial sea trial off Jupiter, Inlet, Florida. All went well, as you can see. With twin 435-hp Volvos and IPS drives, the new Maine-built beauty topped out at 32 knots, burning 44 gph; at a  cruise speed of 27.6 knots, it burned 34.5 gph. And the new Sabre is quiet. The sound levels were 73 dB(A) at cruise, and 75 dB(A) at top speed. We’ve already written about the boat in our Boat Review section. Brand New Sabre 45 Just Launched in Florida; Tops Out at 32 Knots

The new Sabre 45 Salon Express was just launched in Florida (above) and had its first sea trials off Jupiter Inlet, where the Sabre engineers said the waves were stacked, as is often the case there. But the new Sabre came through with flying colors, running 27.5 knots at a continuous cruise speed, burning just 35 gph. It topped out at 32 knots, burning 44 gph. Like many of its predecessors, this new Sabre is a quiet boat, registering just 72 dB(A) at cruise and 75 dB(A) at wide open throttle. The 45, fitting between the company’s existing 42- and…

A Look Back at Miami: Let’s Hear It for the NMMA and Virginia Key I haven’t seen such an upbeat boat show in many years – probably before 2008, in fact. At the Miami International Boat Show last week on Virginia Key the docks were crowded, people were having fun, taking demo rides, buying boats. It wasn’t as if they didn’t have enough to choose from. Indeed, the show had 1,300 new boats for sale, including 550 in the water: big boats, small boats, outboard boats, inboard boats. If it floats it was there. And people were happy. Several told…

New Sabre 45 Salon Express: Made in Maine, Delivered in March

One of the reasons that Sabre Yachts has built, and maintained, a leadership position in the power cruising market is that the Maine-based company keeps introducing new models, in good times and bad. Now it has just delivered hull number one of the 45 Salon Express to its new owner in Florida. The 45, fitting between the company’s existing 42- and 48-foot models, is an all-new design with two staterooms, two full heads, and the built-in-Maine lines and craftsmanship that help define all Sabres. The master stateroom is forward, with an island bed and several lockers and drawers for storage…

Sabre 42: Maine-Built Beauty

With its classic Downeast looks, state-of-the-art performance and luxurious touches, the Sabre 42 is a popular built-in-Maine cruising boat. Living on board is easy, with light all around from large side and aft windows, and the American cherry wood provides a traditional nautical theme throughout. The Zeus pod drives with joystick controls make docking fingertip easy, while the 425-hp Cummins diesels power the boat into the low 30-knot range. One outstanding feature, attesting to Sabre’s quest for quality, is the sound level – only 77 dB(A) at top speed – which is exceptionally low, particularly for a large cruiser. Visibility…

Back Cove 30 Video After Mid-Coast Maine Cruise

I just came across this old video by my friend Billy Black after we had taken a mid-coast Maine cruise six years ago on the then-new Back Cove 30, a great time. It’s particularly appropriate now since I’ll be taking a similar cruise next week on the brand-new Back Cove 32. I’ve go to say that the Maine-built Back Coves (and Sabres too – their big-brother brand) are among my favorite cruising boats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GmS6_deOh8
