Vripack Unveils Doggersbank 77 Long-Range Cruiser

Vripack, the Dutch yacht design firm, just unveiled a new Doggersbank 77 Offshore, a rugged adventure yacht with a creative, single-engine hybrid propulsion system. The new 77 will be the largest Doggersbank that Altena Shipyards, also in the Netherlands, has ever built. The Doggersbank line was started by Vripack founder Dick Boon in 1968; the name comes from a large sandbar in the North Sea. More than 750 Doggersbanks have been built since then, all marked by a high bow to cruise through rough water anywhere in the world, with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures. The new 77 was designed…

Sleek New Q52 from Vripack and Qnatic

The sleek, stunning, head-turning Q52 from Vripac, the Dutch design studio, was originally meant to be a superyacht tender, but it can just as easily serve as a weekend (or longer) luxury cruiser. The boat was built by Qnatic, the Dutch family-owned yard, and it has a large owner’s cabin that can sleep two (with a double bed that can be converted to two twins, if necessary), plus a forward dinette that can sleep two more on a U-shaped couch that converts to a double bed. A glass shading wall separates the large shower from the day head. Vripack says…

Vripack Designs Dramatic 79-Foot Project Meteor

Vripack, the Dutch yacht design firm, just unveiled plans for its 79-foot Project Meteor yacht that has more than its share of head-turning and fresh-thinking features. The yacht has been developed with Van der Valk, the Dutch builder that usually produces larger yachts, and recently has built several explorer yachts. Van der Valks are known to be safe, comfortable, and efficient. The new, champagne-colored Project Meteor yacht has, among other things, a folding-out aft deck and a transom glass door as part of its beach club affect at the stern, and a tender garage under a hatch on the foredeck.…

Burger Unveils Plans for 63 Sportfish Motor Yacht

Burger is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, boat builder in the United States. In fact, Burger has been building yachts, usually large yachts, at its plant in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, since 1864. In the summer of 2018, Burger made a big move toward a more popular size, and launched a 48-foot cruiser with a hull from the Dutch design firm Vripack and power from Volvo’s IPS pod drives. Since then it has launched a 50 and a 66. Now, the company has another idea, a 63 sportfishing motor yacht, also designed by Vripack, and also with IPS power.…

Nordhavn Launches New 80 at FLIBS

Nordhavn is having the world-wide debut of its new 80 at the Fort Lauderdale show, as well as displaying its new 41, the smallest cruiser in its legendary blue-water fleet. The new Nordhavn 80 is something of a departure for the company; it looks a bit more like a superyacht than like most previous Nordhavns. Jeff Leishman, Nordhavn’s design chief, drew the 80 with straighter lines, larger windows, thinner mullions, and generally more of a contemporary European influence than was visible in Nordhavns in the past. If you think this Nordhavn is different, consider the hot tub on the extended…

New Jaktar J-30: Go-Anywhere Explorer Boat

Jaktar, a new builder in Stockholm, just launched its J-30 explorer boat, designed for the far north, but capable of cruising everywhere from the near Arctic to the Great Loop. Indeed, Vripack, the Dutch firm that designed the Jaktar, says the brief called for a boat that was “to be ready to go anywhere, at any time.” The Jacktar J-30 is hand-built using marine-grade aluminum. It has a 46-knot top speed from two 300-hp outboards. (You also can order it with two 250-hp outboards for greater fuel economy and range.) The company says the J-30 was “built for performance and…

Vripack Launches Luxury Version of California 52

Vripack, the Dutch yacht design studio that is working with Nordhavn for some of its larger yachts, just launched a semi-custom California 52 XT weekender in Ibiza. Built by Waterdream in the Netherlands, the California 52 XT is bound to turn heads anywhere in the world, and it has a two-tone paint job that matches the colors of a BMW M8. Waterdream, founded by Prince Bernhard van Oranje of the Netherlands, won the Best Innovation Award at the Cannes World Yacht Trophies with the California 52 last year. At that point, the Prince got the idea to make a special…

Burger, the famed Wisconsin builder, just announced that it’s working on a new 66-foot aluminum motoryacht with a design by Vripack. We don’t have too many details yet, but the new Burger is meant to build on the success of the 48 cruiser that Burger launched in 2018. The 66 is being developed as a mid-sized flybridge yacht, with three staterooms, all with en suite heads, and a large salon and open galley. The new Burger also will have a forward seating area, a large aft deck for al fresco dining and relaxing, and a hydraulic swim platform that’s large…

Nordhavn is working on its first new 80 with a sophisticated Scandinavian-style interior by Vripack, the Dutch design firm. It will be completed next year. The company has already finished hull number one of the 80, designed as a go-anywhere world cruiser that can be run by an owner-operator. Built at the South Coast yard  in Xiamen, China, the yacht will be ready for inspection by the end of the year at Nordhavn’s headquarters in Dana Point, California. The 80 is a departure for Nordhavn in that the company is collaborating with Vripack to create a new, more contemporary, European…

Expedition Yacht Cruises 500 Miles Through Arctic

Pioneer, a 151-foot-long expedition yacht with a rich history, just cruised 500 nautical miles through the Canadian Arctic for ten days, a voyage filled with icebergs, narwhals, whales, walruses, bears, and potential peril at every turn. The trip took the boat, designed by Vripack and built by Palmer Johnson in 1996, through the Canadian province of Nunavut, which is the size of western Europe but with only 29,000 people. The voyage started at the top of Baffin Island, basically across from Greenland and the start of the Northwest Passage, and then continued around glaciers and icebergs past Devon Island,…
