Feds Approve 3 New Offshore Wind Farms

Here’s a new report from gCaptain about the Biden Administration finalizing plans for three new wind farms  off Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. We don’t know yet how these will affect cruising and fishing in those areas: The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has finalized three offshore Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) in federal waters off the coasts of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, which could potentially support between four and eight gigawatts of energy production. The three WEAs total approximately 356,550 acres. The first, known as WEA (A-2), is 101,767 acres and located 26 nautical miles (nm) from Delaware Bay. The…

Vineyard Wind Gets Approval from Interior Dept.

There’s probably going to be a lot of activity in the Atlantic south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket for the next few years. The Interior Department just finished its environmental review of the Vineyard Wind project there, clearing the way for the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the U.S. The Vineyard Wind project is about 12 nm south of both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, and about 15 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. It is a massive project. When it is completed, it will deliver clean, renewable power to more than 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts. The new…

Two Large Wind Farms To Be Built South of Martha’s Vineyard with More than 100 Turbines

Two new wind farms will rise off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard soon, after officials from Massachusetts and Rhode Island announced new contracts to develop them. The larger of the two, called the Vineyard Wind project, could have as many as 100 turbines about 15 miles south of the island. The other project, called Deepwater Revolution Wind, will be a bit closer to shore, about 12 miles southwest of the Vineyard. Vineyard Wind is a joint venture of Avangrid, a Connecticut-based utility, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Construction on the 800-megawatt project, the largest in any state, is scheduled to start…

Wind Farm Off Coast of Atlantic City Moving Ahead

If you’re cruising along the New Jersey shore, you may see a wind farm in the ocean off Atlantic City in a few years. Both houses of the New Jersey legislature now have approved a bill that could help the 24-megawatt project move forward; it gives the state’s Board of Public Utilities 90 days to consider an application by Fishermen’s Energy LLC to build the wind farm about 2.8 miles off Atlantic City. Former Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, had rejected the plan. But new Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, says he wants to pursue it. The new bill would…

Proposed Offshore Wind Farm in Nantucket Sound is Dead

Here’s some news for those of us who love to cruise on Nantucket Sound. Cape Wind, which was supposed to build the first offshore wind farm in the U.S. with up to 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound, is dead. It isn’t going to happen. Indeed, Cape Wind, based in Boston, has notified the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management that it has terminated its wind development lease covering 25 acres about 5 miles off Cape Cod in the area of Horseshoe Shoal. The idea had been to develop a 468-megawatt offshore wind farm, creating enough energy to power 200,000…
