First Look: New 50-mph MJM 53z Flagship with Four 400-hp Mercury Verados

Here’s a first look at the brand-new MJM 53z with four 400-hp Mercury Verado outboards, just launched at the Boston BoatWorks. In its initial trials in Boston Harbor, the new Doug Zurn-designed, Down-East beauty topped out at 50 mph with full fuel and five people on board. The acceleration, for a luxurious 53-foot yacht, was a pleasing 0 to 20 mph in six seconds. After the trials, MJM posted the picture above on social media. The 53z is MJM’s new flagship and its latest outboard-powered boat, after the 35z and the 43z; the company says it’s the largest outboard express…

New Zurn 60 Powercat, Filled with Light, Space and Innovation

With his new Zurn 60 Powercat, Doug Zurn has definitely stepped out of the box – again. There’s a lot going on in this boat, originally designed for an experienced ocean-cruising owner, from its innovative layout to its 23-knot top speed, but the main themes are privacy, space and light. Ever since he drew the first Shelter Island Runabout two decades ago, Zurn has designed low-profile, long-sheerline, Downeast-style boats with generous tumblehome, head-turning looks and head-snapping performance. Bob Johnstone saw that boat and had Zurn design the first MJM, a 34z (the “z,” of course, is for Zurn), in 2003.…

New Vanquish 26: A Fast, Stable, Premium Center Console with a Downeast Look

The new Vanquish 26 Center Console is a user-friendly, hand-crafted, all-purpose boat with a Downeast look and a fast, fuel-efficient and stable hull, all designed by Doug Zurn, one of the best in the business today. It has a long, straight sheerline, bow flare, generous tumblehome and enough teak accents to keep a purist happy, while its 53-plus mph top speed, driven by a state-of-the-art 250-hp Mercury Verado outboard, will give an adrenaline rush to even the most jaded boat owner. In its new 2019 model, Vanquish has added a modest forward cabin to the 26, making it a center-console-plus.…

The Lasting Appeal of 1920s Commuter Yachts: Here’s a Slideshow of Six of Today’s Best

The idea – and then the reality – of commuter yachts started in the Roaring Twenties, when newly rich (and old-monied) Wall Street masters of the universe wanted a faster, and much more fun, way to commute to work from their estates on the golden North Shore of Long Island Sound than on the railroad. Think Gatsby, but with longer lives. As a result, sleek, low-profile, 20-knot yachts, usually with enough mahogany inside to populate a small forest, were born. The elegant designs of commuter yachts, with their clean, graceful and often awe-inspiring lines, have lived on. Here’s a slideshow…

New Low, Fast, Pretty, 63-foot Lynx Commuter from Zurn Yacht Design

Doug Zurn has done it again: Another pretty boat, from Zurn Yacht Design. The new 63-foot Lynx Commuter has most of Zurn’s traditional design elements, many dating back to the Shelter Island 38 Runabout that was launched more than two decades ago. Hull number one of the Lynx Commuter, a modern version of the low, fast, commuter boats that carried the rich and famous from their Long Island mansions to work on Wall Street in the 1930s, was designed as a tender for a superyacht, but subsequent hulls can function as a day cruiser or weekender in their own right.…

MJM Provides More Details, Renderings, Diagrams and Specs for New Flagship 53z with Four Outboards

MJM Yachts has just released more details, with renderings, interior diagrams, layouts and specs for its new flagship, the 53z, which it plans to launch in July, 2019, powered by four 350-hp Mercury Verado outboards. It will be the third outboard cruiser launched by MJM recently (after the MJM 35z, with twins, and the MJM 43z, with triples), and the company says it will be the largest outboard express cruiser ever. The new 53z (the “z” stands for Doug Zurn, the Marblehead, Massachusetts, designer who’s drawn all the MJMs) is an outgrowth of the MJM 50z, which is powered by…

Doug Zurn Designs New 35-Knot Hylas M58, Another Classic Powerboat

Doug Zurn, one of the most prolific designers in the United States, has teamed up with Hylas Yachts to create a new Hylas M58 powerboat that seems to carry all of his signature lines for the traditional sailboat builder. The M58 actually is Hylas’ second venture into the powerboat market; it introduced a Hylas M44 at the Palm Beach show in March. The company says it wanted to incorporate many traditional elements from classic powerboats in the past into the new 58, to help more sailboat owners move into the amenities of power. And the M58 has the long sheer…

MJM Introduces New 53Z with Four 350-hp Mercury Verados; Largest Outboard-Powered Express Cruiser Ever

MJM is doubling down on outboard power, even on its largest yacht to date. Indeed, Bob Johnstone, the company’s founder and CEO, just announced that they will launch a new 53Z, powered by four 350-hp Mercury Verados, in the summer of 2019. The company says it will be the largest outboard express cruiser ever, and it certainly will accelerate the growing trend to outboard power, even in the high-end cruising market. The new 53Z, designed by Doug Zurn, is an outgrowth of the MJM 50Z, which is powered by three 435-hp Volvo IPS600 pod drives. I drove the 50Z in…

Twin Disc Makes It Easy to Maneuver the New Duffield 58. See Video

It’s not easy to maneuver a 58-foot, single-screw cruising boat around the docks in the best of circumstances. Add a wind or current or a narrow fairway, and well, it’s easy for the captain to look bad and really hard to look good. So, when Duffield Yachts was putting the finishing touches on hull number one of its Doug Zurn-designed Duffield 58 Down-East-style cruiser, the California company got a call from Palmer Johnson Power Systems, the distributor for Twin Disc. To make the boat more maneuverable, Twin Disc suggested using its MGX QuickShift transmission, EJS controls and Max Power hydraulic…

Doug Zurn’s Fast, Very Fast, NEB 50, a Marriage of Good Looks and High Performance

With Doug Zurn’s iconic low profile, long sheerline and slender, water-shedding hull, the NEB/Zurn 50 is a standout because of its looks and its performance. The looks speak for themselves, while the performance – a top speed of 56 knots – is due to the boat’s light weight, composite construction and two 1,200-hp MAN diesel power plants and Rolls Royce jet drives. A high-end, custom commuter boat or fast coastal cruiser built at New England Boatworks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the NEB/Zurn 50 combines the best of modern Down East design and cutting-edge engineering and construction. The hull and deck…
