We first reported on plans for the new MJM 35Z back in September. Now we can flesh out the details of this latest collaboration between Douz Zurn, the designer, and Bob Johnstone, the founder of MJM, and so far the new outboard-powered 35Z is living up to our expectations.
It’s no surprise that the new boat has all the classic Down East lines of earlier MJMs, with its low profile, gentle tumblehome and long sheerline. Or that it’s a serious offshore boat, with a 20-degree deadrise at the transom and the highest rating for stability and seaworthiness for any boat under 40 feet – an ISO Certified A Ocean. And the outboards, either Yamaha F300s or Mercury Verado 300XLs (both brands with joysticks), certainly perform. Expected top speed is about 43 knots, with a range of 350 nm at 30 knots. A Seakeeper gyro stabilizer is optional
The bridgedeck is protected by sliding glass or roll-up Strataglass sides; side boarding doors make stepping on board easy from a floating dock. At night, the bridgedeck doubles as a cabin with settees converting to two full-length berths surrounded by a privacy curtain. The galley is down, with a teak and holly sole, and the V- berth and head with shower are forward. The interior is in the classic Herreshoff style with cherry-trimmed, off-white panels.
