We all know about Nordhavn owners who circle the globe, head for high-latitude explorations or spend seasons island-hopping in the South Pacific. More typical, and realistic for the rest of us, are families who embark on coastal cruises or take off for the Caribbean, having adventures together and living the dream. Count the Folvigs from Sarasota in this group.
The captain of this crew, John Folvig, bought a brokerage Nordhavn 62 last April. It was his first trawler, so he and his wife Jen and their three sons spent the summer cruising up and down the East Coast, getting used to the big boat, its systems and its fuel management. But then, feeling confident, they took off, spending Christmas on the boat, named Ocean Quest, at the Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda in the BVI (one of the best places to spend a vacation any time of the year), before heading for Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos and farther down the Caribbean for six months or so.
Nordhavn likes to reward its owners for putting miles under their hulls. It gave the Folvigs their First Distance Pennant when they reached 2,500 nm. Since the family will cruise another 4,000 nm on Ocean Quest before returning home, they’ll get a second one, which is based on 5,000 nm.
