Marshall “Duffy” Duffield, the owner of Duffy Electric Boat Company, finally has the cruising boats of his dreams. His new Duffield 58, designed by Doug Zurn, of Zurn Yacht Design of Marblehead, Mass., was just launched in Newport Beach, California, and it’s a beauty, with Zurn’s trademark low profile, narrow beam, low CG and lightweight construction. As a result, the new Duffield, with a single 600-hp CAT C-12 diesel, mounted well aft with a V-drive to keep noise levels low, tops out at 27 knots and cruises at 18 knots. Fuel-efficient, the Downeast-style Duffield burns 29 gph at cruise.

Duffield had selected Zurn, who has designed boats for MJM Yachts, Marlow, Bruckmann, Shelter Island and others (including Billy Joel’s Vendetta), because “Doug’s designs looked right to me.” Duffy also wanted a fuel-efficient, quiet boat with systems that were accessible and manageable. “My idea of a great yacht is one that is simple,” he said. “Keeping the 58’s systems less complicated and very accessible was paramount.”

The Duffield’s interior has an open plan galley and sitting area in the salon, all with 360-degree views. Sightlines from the helm are excellent. The master has an island queen berth with access on both sides, and a large en suite head with separate shower. To port is a second cabin with a queen berth and en suite head; to starboard is a space that could be used as a child’s cabin, storage, whatever. The transom folds down to provide easy access for water sports.

For comfort either running or at anchor (the boat is moored off Santa Catalina Island), a SeaKeeper gyro stabilizer is standard. Power is transmitted through a Seatorque Control Boss Enclosed Shaft System, for les drag, and the boat has a fuel-polishing system.
