Outer Reef has just announced a new line, the 550 Atlas Series Motoryacht, designed for long-range or coastal cruising with a pilothouse, Portuguese bridge and everything you’d need for a safe and comfortable long weekend or month or so on board. The company says it named the series after the Greek god who personified strength and endurance.
Powered by twin 500-hp John Deere diesels, the new 550 Atlas is expected to cruise economically in the 10-knot range, and top out in the 17-knot range. The hull is made of hand-laid fiberglass with PVC core sandwich construction above the waterline and a vinylester barrier for osmosis protection. A full-length keel extends below the running gear.
The new Atlas has a large teak swim platform with stairs on the starboard side leading up to the cockpit, with an aft settee and teak table. The cockpit is fully protected overhead by the overhang from the long boat deck.
You enter the salon via a sliding door from the aft deck. A large, L-shaped settee and table are to port; a smaller settee is to starboard. The cabinetry and lockers are all teak; the fit and finish is immaculate. The galley has Corian countertops and all the appliances and storage spaces you’d need for a long cruise.
The pilothouse has an L-shaped settee on a raised platform with a teak table. There’s one Stidd helm seat and a standard Garmin NavCom package. A curved teak stairway leads to the accommodations deck below; weathertight doors port and starboard open to the side decks.
The full-beam master suite is aft with a walkaround, queen-sized berth, teak nightstand tables and lots of storage. The en suite head has Corian countertops and a large shower. The VIP cabin is in the bow with a tapered queen-sized berth, storage and en suite head and shower. A third, guest cabin, is on the port side.
The flybridge has a centered Stidd helm chair and a stainless-steel destroyer wheel. There’s an L-shaped settee to port and a wet bar to starboard. Stairs lead down the starboard side to the pilothouse.
