New GoPro HERO8 Black: Great for Action Pictures

If you want to take some great pictures, videos or stills, of your cruising life this summer, take a look at the new GoPro HERO8 Black, a waterproof, super-stabilized, touch-screen action camera.

GoPros have been popular in the boating and water-sports community since they launched their first HERO in 2004. Now the HERO8offers new features that should enhance GoPro’s legendary appeal.

For starters, the HERO8 has been streamlined, so it’s easier to fit in your pocket – a very good feature when you’re bouncing around on a cruising boat. It has folding fingers at its base so you can swap out mounts easily. And the new lens is two times more impact-resistant than any previous model.

Keeping cameras stabilized is of particular importance to cruisers, and the HERO8 has what the company calls HyperSmooth 2.0 to reduce the “shake” in videos. It has three levels – On, High, and Boost – so you can get the smoothest video ever offered in a HERO camera. HyperSmooth works with all resolutions and frame rates.

Another feature, TimeWarp 2.0, lets you capture time-lapse videos while you move. It adjusts its speed based on motion, scene detection and lighting. You can even slow it down to real time with the tap of a finger, and then speed it up again.

LiveBurst, also new, starts recording 1.5 seconds before and stops 1.5 seconds after your shot so you can choose the best possible single frame. And the HERO8 also has a repositioned front-mounted microphone (one of three) to reduce wind noise, something that is often a problem when recording cruising action scenes.

The GoPro HERO8 Black starts at $349 on Amazon. Read more:
