Vicem is getting ready for sea trials on its new 50 Classic, and it will launch two more by the end of the year and a fourth early next year. The 50 Classic, a larger version of the Turkish builder’s 46, has a fiberglass hull and superstructure and a high-quality wood interior.
Over the years, Vicem has earned a reputation for building high-quality, Downeast-style, cold-molded wooden cruising yachts. But it turned to fiberglass for the 50 because of its faster construction time and easier maintenance.
With its low profile, long sheer and hint of tumblehome aft, the 50 fits in the Vicem family of classic cruising yachts; it’s a combination of ageless style and contemporary performance, with power coming from twin 435-hp Volvo IPS600 pod drives. Top speed is expected to be 28 knots, with a cruising speed of 24 knots and a range of 400 nm.
Vicem offers a wide range of custom possibilities on its yachts – everything from the number of staterooms to the choice of countertop materials, cabinetry and sole flooring. Hull number one of the new 50 Classic is designed as a couple’s cruising yacht, with a one stateroom layout; it’s forward, with an en suite head and lots of storage.
It’s a creative layout. The bed is set athwartship, with the head of the bed on the starboard side and a vanity/desk to port, flanked by hanging lockers. The master head is actually all the way forward.
The galley is a bit aft, at the foot of the stairs coming down from the salon, on the port side. A day head and a washer/dryer compartment are opposite to port.
The salon is straightforward, with the helm station to starboard, and flanking settees on each side aft. Large doors open to the cockpit, with a large L-shaped lounge, with a table, on the starboard side. A walkway to the teak swim platform is to port.
The Vicem 50 seems to be a popular size range, between the company’s 46 and 55. Indeed, the first four have already been sold. The new boat, says Yigit Akbarias, the company’s production manager, will give owners “excellent seakeeping and accommodations luxurious and comfortable enough for longer trips.”
The new 50 is available in both the salon/express and flybridge versions; a two-stateroom interior layout also is an option.
