Sunreef, the Polish builder of luxury catamarans, just announced that it’s starting an entirely new line of Explorer Yachts for global expeditions, and it has hired Mike Horn, an adventurer and explorer, as its brand ambassador.
Sunreef said the new Explorer Yachts line of power cats is dedicated to discovering cruising grounds around the world, with a pioneering design that combines seaworthiness, redundancy and extreme range for long voyages. It will build on the Sunreef 50M (164 feet) that was unveiled this spring.
And it will use its association with Horn to expand its exploration theme to a larger audience. Horn, 55, has starred on adventure shows on three French TV channels since 2015. He was born in South Africa and now lives in the Swiss Alps with his family.
His expeditions include a solitary 12,000-mile trek around the world on the Arctic Circle from 2002 to 2004, using boat, kayak, ski kite and foot, but no motorized transportation.
Horn also took a six-month solo trip across the South American continent, leaving the Pacific on foot, climbing to the source of the Amazon in the Peruvian Andes, and then descending the Amazon until he reached the Atlantic.
Sunreef’s new line of Explorer Yachts will have shallow draft, massive storage capacity and large entertainment zone, and is designed to go anywhere from the tropics to the Arctic. Sunreef says the line “will offer the safest platform for circumnavigation, while providing the highest level of luxury with custom-tailored interiors and a fleet of toys on board.”
Francis Lapp, Sunroof’s founder, says “The definition of luxury has changed over the years. Nowadays, true luxury is a sensation, a feeling, an experience.” He said the new Explorer Line is all about building “magic moments at sea.”
The 50M Explorer (pictured above) is designed to be self-sufficient for weeks, or even months, with extensive room for storing provisions and redundant mechanical systems; it even has a state-of-the-art waste-management system.
It also has a wide stance, with a beam of 46’ 9” that creates lots of room for creative interior spaces, including a master suite on the main deck with its own terrace forward, a spa, glass-walled swimming pool, and an al fresco cinema with a bar. Read more:
