The new Zeelander 5, with all the builder’s trademark curves and elegant lines, will make its world debut at the Palm Beach show, starting March 23.
The 48-foot Zeelander 5 is the latest masterpiece from the Dutch builder, an updated version of the Zeelander 44, except that it’s larger, faster and quieter. It has Zeelander’s unmistakable profile, with its low profile and generous tumblehome leading to a large sun lounge and swim platform that folds out from the transom.
The new Zeelander 5 is a two-stateroom, two-head, luxury cruiser that tops out at 40 knots and delivers a soft and quiet ride, registering only 70 dB( A) at the helm. A few years ago I was on the flagship 72 running down Narragansett Bay off Newport with Sietze Koopmans, Zeelander’s founder. It was one of the most solid and smoothest riding boats I’ve ever been on. It also was one of the most quiet, with my sound meter showing only 72 dB(A) at the helm at 39.8 knots.
Power options for the new Zeelander 5 are twin 370-hp Volvo IPS500 pod drives; twin 460-hp IPS600s, or triple 480-hp IPS650s.
The Zeelander 5 has a superyacht-quality fit and finish, with elegant woods and hand-stitched leather. Two seats face the helm in the salon, where a large electric sunroof can be opened for more fresh air and light. A U-shaped sofa seats eight to ten people around a dining table. The galley is made for cruising, with a retractable sliding window aft that provides a connection to the cockpit.
A plush lounge is aft there, with another table. Two steps down lead to the super-sized swim platform; it’s large enough to house a pair of sun lounges. Another sun lounge is on the foredeck.
Below, the master stateroom is full-beam amidships, with a walkaround bed set athwartships facing a dressing table. The guest cabin is forward with a V-berth, and another head and shower.
