ALVA Yachts keeps pushing the envelope, building bigger and more high-tech solar/electric yachts. Its latest is a 90-foot luxurious solar/electric catamaran superyacht that gets additional clean power from hydrogen and wing sails.
ALVA, a German company founded just three years ago, says its new OCEAN ECO 90 H2, currently in production, will be the first superyacht to run without any fossil fuel at all, with silent, sustainable power and zero emissions. The new 90 H2 will be launched late next year and it should have virtually unlimited range.
Standard power for the new yacht comes from two 250-kW electric motors, with two 480-kWs as options. They are powered by a 500+kWh battery pack, which is charged and recharged by 2,152 square feet of solar cells on top of the yacht. They provide 40kWp from the sun.
The new 90 H2 uses hydrogen cells, supplied by EODev, as a range extender. The cat also has an Oceanwings wind propulsion system that uses computer-controlled wind sensors on the wing sails to adjust the sail angle automatically.
Holger Henn, ALVA Yachts CEO, says, “What is special about this project is certainly the leap that we are making in technology. A superyacht that can operate without fossil fuel is something we could only dream of…but we want to show what is possible in boat building today.”
Aside from its eco-conscious qualities, the new ALVA 90 is simply an enormous superyacht. It’s 90’ 2” long with a beam of 45’ 9”, providing vast spaces inside and outside the cat’s two hulls. It has a draft of just 3’ 9” and displaces 99 tons.
There’s a Jacuzzi on the upper deck, along with a cocktail bar and sky lounge. The galley on the main deck has its own island and bar stools; the dining table seats 10. The beach club all the way aft is full beam.
The new ALVA has four staterooms for eight guests, plus two single cabins for crew. The master stateroom comes with a private study and walk-in wardrobe. Read more:
