Sarp’s Edge: Thinking Outside the Box

When Sarp launched the first hull in its XSR 85 line in Turkey last summer, it said the head-turning yacht represented thinking outside the box; it was aimed a fresh generation of owners.

Hull number one, named Edge, got a lot of attention when it was shown at the Cannes and Monaco shows last fall. Edge was indeed hard to miss. The hull was painted in “Porsche Guards Red,” a unique color not found in many other yachting venues. It was a finalist in two categories of the 2023 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards, “Outstanding Exterior” and “Best New Series.”

The naval architecture for Sarp’s XSR 85 line was by Van Oossanan in The Netherlands, and the interior and exterior was by Red Yacht Design in Istanbul and London. The idea was to create an open-plan yacht that would appeal to younger owners who were more interested in experiences than in luxury. The new Sarp would have lots of social spaces for informal outdoor living.

Edge has a fast-displacement, composite hull that Sarp says provides more interior space than a V hull with chines. Powered by twin 800-hp MANs, it has a top speed of 21 knots, and a range of more than 1,000 nm at 12 knots.

Aside from its color, Edge is striking. It has floor-to-ceiling windows in the salon, and doors open port, starboard and aft so the salon becomes an open-air living room, connected to a multi-level aft deck. Below, extra supports were built into the hull sides to hold large windows in four cabins there; the windows appear in a parallelogram shape, giving the impression of a single window line stretching along the hull.

A bar with high stools faces a forward bulkhead in the salon with a wall that can be lowered to reveal the galley; when it’s down, the view is uninterrupted all the way back to the transom.

An interior staircase connects all the decks on one vertical axis, like a tree house. The floating wooden steps are made by hand, and are carved with imprints of leaves. The yacht has lots of mirrors and glass to create a sense of depth; the furniture is loose for maximum flexibility.

The aft deck is a wide open space with lounging areas; a full-beam set of stairs leads down to the hydraulic swim platform. Teak decks on both port and starboard sides lead to the foredeck, and another sitting and lounging area. Glass windows are set in the bulwarks to provide a view of the water, creating an impression of even more space.

In the full-beam master stateroom on the lower deck, the ceiling over the bed curves down to connect with the headboard. The dressing table on the starboard side has a red marble top. Forward, you can close pocket doors in the lower salon to create a fourth stateroom with twin berths.

Sarp, which usually makes superyachts in its yard in Antalya in southern Turkey, built Edge on spec. It’s listed with Denison Yachting in the U.S., with a price of $5,414,500.
