Mochi 44: New England Lines, Italian Style

Mochi-Craft 44, the Italian version of a New England lobster boat, was first launched almost two decades ago. But the new version, with its Coral Red hull and twin 600-hp Cummins diesels, is still turning heads on both sides of the Atlantic.

Mochi dates its origins to the early 1960s and the port of Pesaro on the Adriatic. For a while it made flybridge yachts, but in 2001 the Ferretti Group bought it, moved it to nearby Forli, and launched a new line called the Dolphin. Today, the Mochi-Craft line runs from the 44 up to a 74.

The 44 is a two-cabin, two-head cruiser with a top speed of 32 knots and a range of 260 nm at its cruising speed of 22 knots. The fiberglass hull has a 16-degree deadrise at the transom, offering a balance of stability and performance. But the Mochi 44 is more about style than numbers. The company says it offers the charm of a timeless yacht with the Ferretti Group’s cutting-edge technology.

The Mochi 44 is built for comfort, and the cockpit leads directly to the dinette in the salon to create one large social space, but you can close the salon with a sliding partition for protection from the weather. There are also air-conditioning vents at the helm, to keep the captain cool in the summer, plus an overhead opening sun roof.

A C-shaped leather settee is on the port side of the salon, with an extendable teak dining table; a fridge and bar are to starboard. Below, the galley is on the starboard side, with a fridge/freezer, two-burner cooktop and microwave/convection oven.

The master stateroom is amidships on the port side, with a queen bed set at an angle and an en suite head and shower. A large VIP cabin is in the forepeak, with a double bed and a single bed; guests use the day head to starboard.

The Ferretti Group has a large showroom in Fort Lauderdale.
