The Artnautica LRC 58 is certainly a different kind of cruiser. Designed as a Long Range Cruiser, the aluminum-hulled Artnautica 58 is self-righting with a narrow beam, shallow draft, and a range of about 5,000 nm at 7 knots.
Artnautica is the brainchild of Dennis Harjamaa, who started out studying yacht design in Maine, and worked as a designer in Finland and then New Zealand before he started Artnautica Yacht design Ltd (NZ) and drew the lines for the LRC 58. He wanted a boat he could live on and take cruising, and he wanted it to be simple, rugged, efficient and safe.
Originally, Harjamaa said, he was thinking about a sailboat, but then decided to go with power. “With a powerboat,” he said, “I can point exactly where I want to get to and probably get there when I want.” Then there’s the comfort factor. “The comfort of sitting in a stout pilothouse when it’s windy and rainy outside is priceless,” he said.
The first Artnautica was built in New Zealand in 2013 and in the summer Harjamaa cruises coastal waters there from Auckland to the Bay of Islands. Artnauticas are now built by Aluboot in the Netherlands; the latest has twin engines, an extended cockpit and a double cabin aft.
Artnautica’s long, narrow hull is powered by a small, efficient Beta Marina diesel, from 75 to 90-hp, and a top speed of 9 knots. The keel provides directional stability, and it protects the prop and rudder. A prop tunnel results in a shallow shaft angle of just two degrees, and contributes to the boat’s low center of gravity. The forward, middle and aft bulkheads are all watertight.
The LRC 58s have been built with a variety of interior layouts, but the standard version calls for three cabins. The cockpit and the wheelhouse are on the same level, for ease of movement. The galley is in the wheelhouse, with a full-size fridge, oven and microwave. A few steps forward is the salon, with an L-shaped settee that converts to a double berth, a small desk for office work, and an en suite head and shower. Forward, through a bulkhead, is the master stateroom with a double bed.
