Peter Island Resort To Reopen This Fall

Here’s some good news for fans of the British Virgin Islands (and I think that’s just about all of us). The new and improved Peter Island Resort is scheduled to reopen officially on October 3, and will be up and running for the rest of the year and the holiday season.

The original Peter Island Resort was destroyed by the hurricanes in 2017. The six-year rebuilding has resulted in a major transformation and upgrading of the resort and its facilities.

Not that there was anything wrong with Peter Island to begin with. I first sailed there many, many years ago from Road Town on Tortola. That wasn’t hard; it’s only about 5 nm away, and we tied up at the resort’s dock and enjoyed a weekend there. Much more recently, we dropped the hook on our chartered Grand Banks 36 (a sistership to our own Grand Banks back in Connecticut) in Deadman’s Bay, one of the prettiest spots in the BVI, took the dink to the beach and then walked over to the resort for lunch; one of the best days ever.

The new Peter Island Resort will have 52 rooms, including many on the beach front and eight with a private outdoor hot tub, an infinity swimming pool overlooking Deadman’s Bay, two restaurants, a spa overlooking Reef Bay, and a recreation area with pickleball, basketball and bocce ball courts. It  also will have a marina and mooring balls; if you stay on your boat you can still use the resort’s facilities. If you want to stay on shore, room rates start at $1,000 a night.

The resort also will have a new conference center for groups of up to 180 people. They can take a ferry over from Road Town, or a helicopter from the airport on Tortola. A private water taxi from Red Hook on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgins runs seven days a week and takes just an hour and 15 minutes.
