Johnson Yachts is showing its newest model, a 70-footer, at the Palm Beach show. Designed by Bill Dixon, the well-known British naval architect, the Johnson 70 is meant to provide the usable size of a superyacht in a manageable size.
Johnson has been making yachts for the past 37 years in Taiwan; it’s built 350 of them so far, selling them all around the world, but with the United States as a major market. The new 70 is the smallest in the fleet, with five models now going up to 115 feet.
The 70 takes advantage of its 18’ 3” beam to provide a lot of interior volume for owners who value extra space on board. You can order it with three or four cabins below, and an open flybridge with a hardtop, or an enclosed sky lounge up top. A slash of glazing in the hull side adds a contemporary, aggressive look, while also providing lots of natural light to the accommodations deck below.
The interior is by Design Unlimited, with studios in England; they generally work with superyachts and high-end homes. The Johnson 70 is meant to serve as a home away from home for its owners.
The salon is in the modern open style, with a long sofa on the starboard side and a smaller one to port. The large galley is forward, to starboard, with the dinette to port; guests will enjoy great views through the aggressively raked windshield and large side windows. Interior stairs lead up to the flybridge or sky lounge, a nice touch for safety.
Below, the master stateroom is set full-beam amidships, with a large home-like head and shower aft. The king-sized bed is centered; there is a line of cabinets on the starboard side and a vanity to port. The VIP cabin with a walkaround bed is forward, and the guest cabin with a double bed is on the starboard side; they both have en suite heads. Owners can order a fourth cabin, with twin berths, on the port side.
