The Great Loop anyone? The new Holterman Commander 54 is currently in its yard in The Netherlands, but Holterman is opening an office in the U.S. soon.
And the Commander 54, with two cabins, two heads, a low bridge clearance and a range of 500 nm at 8.5 knots would certainly seem to be good candidate for cruising the Loop, the ICW, or many other spots in the United States. For his part, Julian van Santen, Holterman’s sales director, said the new Commander 54 “is perfectly suited to the U.S. market and U.S. boating preferences.”
The Holterman Shipyard was founded in 1964 in Meppe, northeast of Amsterdam, and has been building a series of larger and often expedition yachts ever since. The Commander 54 has a steel hull and superstructure, and a round bilge.
Standard power comes from twin 175-hp Volvo Penta D4s with straight shafts. They’re basic, they’re efficient, and they’re reliable. Top speed: 10 knots.
The new 54 has a distinctive coach roof that seems to be sloping everywhere for protection; it has two opening sun roofs over the salon. A two-person seat faces the helm, which is centered. The galley is aft on the port side, and an L-shaped settee and expandable table are to starboard.
In the aft cockpit, a large C-shaped settee is aft, facing two tables and two occasional chairs.
Below, the master stateroom is full-beam amidships. The queen-sized bed is centered; chairs and tables are on both sides; the en suite head is large. The other cabin is forward with lots of storage and its own head.
A semi-custom yard, Holterman has added some luxury touches to the 54. The black-and-white-marble staircase leading from the salon to the accommodations deck is covered with crocodile leather. The hull color is a bespoke mix of Greek blue metallic with champagne.
