A Russian oligarch is building a luxury resort and marina on Skorpios, once the famed Greek island vacation home of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
The 205-acre island on the Ionian Sea was the site of Onassis’ wedding to Jackie Kennedy on Oct. 20, 1968. Onassis had bought it in 1963 and imported 200 varieties of trees to create a lush forest, cleared a white-sand beach, and built a harbor for his 325-foot yacht Christina O. Now, Onassis, his son, Alexander, and his daughter, Christina, are all buried there.
A trust representing the 24-year-old daughter of Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian billionaire, bought Skorpios from Onassis’ heirs in 2013. Rybolovlev got approval from the Greek government in December, 2020, to build an exclusive resort there. It’s called the VIP Exclusive Club.
The resort will have 60 bedrooms, a helipad, spa, amphitheater and a superyacht marina. It’s being developed by Mycenae S.A., with designs from Snohetta, a Norwegian firm that also designed the new Library of Alexandria in Egypt, Europe’s first underwater restaurant (in the village of Baly, Norway), and the headquarters of Le Monde in Paris.
There aren’t any details yet about the marina, but a week at the land-based resort will start at about $1 million.
There’s some talk in art circles that Rybolovlev, 57, may house part of his $2 billion collection there, including works by Picasso, Matisse and Rothko. Rybolovlev owns two chalets in Gstaad; he bought a Palm Beach mansion from Donald Trump for $95 million in 2008. He also owns the AS Monaco Football Club.
