The Moorings, the worldwide charter giant, is adding a new location in La Paz, on the tip of the Baja peninsula in Mexico. The Moorings new base there, with sail and power charter boats, will open in time for the 2025 season.
La Paz is at the entrance to the Sea of Cortez, which Jacques Cousteau called “the world’s aquarium” – for good reason. Also known as the Gulf of California, it’s one of the most biodiverse ecological regions in the world, and its warm waters and low surfaces protect coral reefs, plankton and algae. The area was declared a World Natural Heritage site in 2005.
The Sea of Cortez is home to 39 percent of the marine mammals in the world, with 700 species of fish, whale sharks, humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, sword fish, octopus, stingrays, shrimp and giant squid. You can snorkel with pods of dolphins, dodge manta rays, and spot the occasional breaching whale.
The sapphire blue water offers a sharp contrast with the Baja’s remote, rugged landscape, but on a charter from La Paz you’ll find pristine beaches, secluded coves, and coastal towns, including the destination resort of Cabo San Lucas. La Paz is also a short, non-stop flight from many U.S. airports.
A charter vacation there is reasonable. Indeed, a seven-night charter starting Dec. 14 on a new Moorings 403 PC with three cabins costs $13,049.
